NASCAR Driver Apologizes To All the B*****s Who Don’t Think Breastfeeding is ‘Nasty’

I wonder if he kisses his mom with that mouth?

NASCAR driver Kasey Kahne has apologized for a Tweet wherein he called the sight of a woman breastfeeding her child "nasty," and a follow up Tweet wherein he called a woman who criticized his calling the woman nasty a "bitch." Someone who makes obscene amounts of money as a professional athlete/amusement has a sub-enlightened attitude about something? Hold me; we'll get through this together.

He drives a car very fast. He is NOT an "athlete."

Driving requires a certain skill set, to be sure. Focus, visual acuity, stamina...but an "athlete?" I think your post-slash "amusement" is more accurate.

Race drivers are skill atheletes - like baseball players, golfers, and boxers. Physical strength is secondary to reflexes, timing, and speed of thought, but it is an absoulete requirement for a professional.

At the sportsman level, the sheer amount of physical work required to be ready to compete requires a fair degree of athletecisim - many of my racing friends have participated in college or amatuer sports (rugby, powerlifting, cycling, hiking, rollerblading). - And the travel makes minor leauge baseball look like paradise.

Because to my (extensive) knowledge, special parts for racing (specified as "police',"taxi", heavy duty, "ambulance", etc) significantly predate NASCAR.
And much of the reason for their use is SAFETY. Look at short track racing - wheels break, axles eject, hubs, wheelbearings, and brakes fail. Clutches explode!

Cup cars still have steel bodies - and some of those panels are standard production stuff. Specailsed versions of passenger cars, produced only in enough qualities to be "stock" - typically 50, 100, 0r 500 - have been around since '57 (for sure) in domestics, earlier in imports.
Cars have been built up from "bodies in white" (not as produced on the assembly line) since the early '60"s (Holman-Moody Fords), and most of the remaining parts of the car were modified or replaced. In particular, the hub and brake assemblies were racing-only parts, unchanged to the present day. In fact, all makes used the stuff initally designed by Ford and initally produced for Holman-Moody - even the Mopars used these "Grand National" axle tubes and hubs in their rear axles, because the Chrysler "8 3/4" rear housing was similar to the Ford "9 inch".

Headlights and taillights have been removed for racing since the '20s, and were typically replaced by sheetmetal - the headlight decals are a recent innovation, carried over from drag racing.

Lest you think this is only a NASCAR thing, I race against a couple if ex-IMSA "stock" cars, and know the Vermont SportsCar guys who build the Subaru rally cars. They may use some "stock" parts, but these things are about as "Stock" as the space shuttle. F'r instance, the body shell has to be completely stripped of sealer and undercoating, and be "seam welded", as the factory spot welds are inadequate to hold the car together!
