(10,140 posts)Seems the Treasury Dept is being used as our only defense against Russian interference.
"June 11, 2018
Washington Today, the U.S. Department of the Treasurys Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) designated five Russian entities and three Russian individuals under Executive Order (E.O.) 13694, Blocking the Property of Certain Persons Engaging in Significant Malicious Cyber-Enabled Activities, as amended, and Section 224 of the Countering Americas Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA). One of the designated entities in controlled by and has provided material and technological support to Russias Federal Security Service (FSB), while two others have provided the FSB with material and technological support. OFAC is also designating several entities and individuals for being owned or controlled by, or acting for or on behalf of, the three entities that have enabled the FSB.
The United States is engaged in an ongoing effort to counter malicious actors working at the behest of the Russian Federation and its military and intelligence units to increase Russias offensive cyber capabilities. The entities designated today have directly contributed to improving Russias cyber and underwater capabilities through their work with the FSB and therefore jeopardize the safety and security of the United States and our allies, said Treasury Secretary Steven T. Mnuchin. The United States is committed to aggressively targeting any entity or individual working at the direction of the FSB whose work threatens the United States and will continue to utilize our sanctions authorities, including those provided under CAATSA, to counter the constantly evolving threats emanating from Russia.
Examples of Russias malign and destabilizing cyber activities include the destructive NotPetya cyber-attack; cyber intrusions against the U.S. energy grid to potentially enable future offensive operations; and global compromises of network infrastructure devices, including routers and switches, also to potentially enable disruptive cyber-attacks. Todays action also targets the Russian governments underwater capabilities. Russia has been active in tracking undersea communication cables, which carry the bulk of the worlds telecommunications data."

(17,884 posts)middle to lower middle class, less educated white men with fears of losing their privilege are fertile ground for Russian memes and interference to take root. Ironically, in the more conservative parts of the country, the children of "better dead than red" are thoroughly co-opted by the GRU's narratives. Strange world we live in.

(37,648 posts)If the Democrats aren't going to do anything substantive, with teeth in it, it doesn't really matter.
We knew a lot of this computer and troll stuff before. Some parts are new and very disturbing. But we can't do anything, if the leaders aren't going to do anything.
Once Mueller showed up and became a nothingburger, and then when Congress did nothing, I admit I accepted that the Russians and Trump calculated correctly, and they ended up with their game plan intact (okay, they lost about 22 agents here).
I also think it's a bad idea to have Mueller testify. It won't be what the Democrats think it will be, I'm afraid. The Republicans are going to tear into him. It will be a disturbing spectacle, and the Americans will simply pick the side they like as having won the day with or against Mueller. Leaving Mueller bruised and beaten.
All I can do is vote, and hope that neither side fools with Medicare as it exists now or with Social Security.

michael savage is a talk radio god, and most trump opponents have no clue how much the russians have been piggybacking talk radio
the old soviets hated Voice of America, the radio broadcasts that thwarted them all over the world, and it would be poetic for them to figure out how to horn in on a wildly successful talk radio propaganda operation liberals ignore and take it farther than establishment GOP would want - and that is exactly what is happening /has happened

(9,090 posts)driving, working, doing chores in most of the US. that's the 20-1 monopoly in 40 states with 80 senators. that buzz reaches a huge secondary and tertiary audience. in most of the US, and that's why the republicans at an upper level don't want free wifi infrastructure, people interested in politics have no alternatives before getting home to fight the family for the TV
i just met a town mayor at a party and he said he had to make sure after he had the rw radio station on to get the traffic, weather, sports that he set it to a new station so when he turned the radio back on it didn't come back on with one of the rw dipshits.
the right has sold to democrats and the left the fallacy that it's market demand, and free speech, that 95% of americans prefer the lies, ignorance, and hate from the rw monopoly that says trump is great. so we get polls that 75% know aoc and only a few like her and that is interpreted by the media and dems with no clue that 1500 radio stations led by limbaugh have been attacking and sending death threats at the 'ignorant commie socialist stalinist' for a year - with no one getting her back re those radio stations getting a total free speech free ride reaching 50 mil a week. it's fucking ridiculous.

he never looked in good health and even though he is a racist sexist fascist asshole he had a brain. he would speak out a bit but on most topics he was usually on board, same old
and if the base is attacking him it points out what happens even to the biggest of them if they cross limbaugh. it happens to all the others - the dittoheads can't call their god, maybe cause the russians have hacked the call screening software, or locked up all the paid caller appointments, so they patrol the others that will take their calls and make sure they're all on the same page

(11,726 posts)The documents are not upsetting at all. I would venture to say that the vast majority of "non-bot", "non-troll", DU members already understood quite clearly that Russian interference occurred during the last 2 elections and will likely occur in the coming 2020 campaign.
The upsetting part is likely that Trump and the GOP as beneficiaries, are not going to do anything to protect the integrity of the electoral process. The mere emergence of documentation is just confirmation, for the history books, if there are to be any left.
The United States regularly attempts to influence or straight up interfere with elections in other countries. We have orchestrated coups and backed horrible governments for the benefit of the wealthy in our country. That does not make what the Russians did in 2016 and 2018 acceptable AT ALL. It is just a statement that we have to acknowledge that countries interfere in each other's elections. There is a MAJOR difference between the US targeting elections in Nicaragua and El Salvador which are considerable weaker and defenseless nations and the Russians targeting our elections. We have the ability to defend ourselves and make elections basically safe fair. What is lacking at this point is any sense of loyalty to country by Republicans. They know what is happening but don't care because they are benefiting from it. That is the upsetting part.

(6,042 posts)When Putin targeted Clinton he targeted human rights, here and abroad-including Russia, Europe, Central and South America. Possibly you may believe that your human rights are not on the line-but mine are.
This complaint also speaks directly to the human rights disaster unfolding today at our physical southern border. Are we supposed to yawn and say no big deal when people are caged and dying-and those conditions can be tied to a propaganda campaign by a well-financed, secret propaganda campaign by a human rights abusing foreign government.
It speaks to the current human rights crisis in Nicaragua under Daniel Ortega today where the former revolutionary has made common cause with a right wing Catholic hierarchy to make the lives of woman and teenaged girls a living hell and the country a human rights disaster area?
Nicaragua today is not a weak or defenseless country. it is a major human rights abuser.
We have other borders than physical borders in the 21st century-we have a cyberspace border. It has been breached successfully and we still don't know to what extent.
The events in this particular complaint occurred between 2014 and right through 2018. There is no indication they have stopped or that all DU members or other sites are fully aware of the extent of the malicious interference or the fact that the damage is ongoing.
There is a continuing FBI investigation re the actual hacking into our election systems, and each time we get a report there seems to be evidence that these events were more widespread than previously reported. . Certainly in states such as Georgia which uses the proven easily hacked Diebold machines, with no paper trail -votes can easily be changed or not counted. Georgia may have lost a governorship; Florida a governorship and a senator.
In fact it was only after the election of Trump in 2016 that Americans were officially informed by our government that there was critical interference in that election. Even after that announcement many attempted to downplay the interference and actually deny that the interference had any effect. At present there is very little discussion of the extent of the infiltration or damage done.

(10,678 posts)every time you think something has been found, there is still more unknown that we have yet to discover. Every time I vote I get into a discussion with the poll workers about the machines and paper trails and they have no clue, it drives my wife nuts but I keep asking. I do believe votes have been changed or not counted for a long time now, including all elections, not just presidential.

(1,905 posts)We started using electronic voting machines. The manufacturers were in the bed with the conservanazi GOPers. The GOPers knew the machines could be manipulated to give the the outcome they desired. Now the republikan party is in bed with the Russians (so to speak). Both Putin and the conservanazis are reaping the rewards.

(4,344 posts)My blood pressure goes up just a bit whenever I hear tRumps deluded followers laughing at/about Russian interference in our democracy. They will never get it even though there is evidence all around. It is some sort of bizarre psychological phenomena. It appears as though they love Vladimir more than they love their own country. They really are a sad, sick lot.
To them I say: Study history. Any country which has ever allowed extensive foreign interference internally, has failed. It will not be different in our case. This interference must be stopped or our country will fail. But maybe that's what the delusional followers of tRump want. They will then live in infamy as destroying one of the best representative forms of government to have ever existed. They are sick, simply sick.

(27,794 posts)There is definitely an element on the left who literally believe this, and bought the assertion that the DNC "rigged" the outcome of the convention based on a few cherry-picked emails from hacked data. Which, by the way, it should be illegal to disseminate, but no one seems to care about that in the least.
I know some people on the left who absolutely do no accept that Russian interference cost the 2016 election. It's upsetting.
Too many people all around are playing the fools. It is sad.

(22,976 posts)There are right-wing, white nationalist governments springing up worldwide. They all fear the displaced brown hordes headed their way. Hatred of the other sadly runs pretty deep in the interior of the United States. Republicans are taking to fascism like ducks to water. The few who objected to 45 in the beginning are now either retired, deceased, or far worse, won over (Lindsey Graham, Ted Cruz, etc.)
Theres also a newer, more virulent strain of anti-science, anti-education, anti-liberalism ideology being spread by the efforts of seriously bad actors, specifically Steve Bannon. Hes had direct input in every country thats recently turned to far-right nationalism; Bannons advised principals in the UK (Brexit), France, Italy, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Sweden, and now Brazil, among others.
This is why the U.S. is now courting friendships with these governments, and obviously, Russia. Theres the shared unspoken-but-observable goal of creating a white-nationalist empire, running from the Americas, across Europe, and anchored in Russia. Reads like Twilight Zone script, I know, but tons of good information from solid sources exists.

(2,710 posts)Say antifa? Or others who give the right every reason and excuse for wanting law enforcement to clamp down on the resistance?
Violent clashes cause conservatives (liberals too, but not as intensely) to feel fear which predictably causes them to demand that law enforcement do whatever it takes to stop it.
Any evidence that Project Lahkta is encouraging antifa or others to riot?
