"GEO GROUP GAVE GENEROUSLY TO TRUMP" to run lucrative detention centers!

House Oversight Committee seeks documents from for-profit immigrant detention companies
BY GRAHAM KATES
UPDATED ON: JULY 12, 2019 / 2:43 PM / CBS NEWS

"The Committee is investigating the Trump Administration's rapidly increasing use of for-profit contractors to detain tens of thousands of immigrants, including a troubling series of reports of health and safety violations and the dramatically escalating and seemingly unchecked costs to U.S. taxpayers for these contracts," Cummings and Raskin wrote in their letters.

The lawmakers cited claims of abuse and inadequate living conditions in their letters to the chief executives of CoreCivic, Geo Group, Inc., and DC Capital Partners, LLC. CoreCivic and Geo Group are each paid hundreds of millions of dollars to operate detention centers for ICE. DC Capital Partners is an investment firm that owns Caliburn International, the parent corporation of the company that operates a massive unaccompanied children shelter in Homestead, Florida.

The letters to DC Capital President Thomas Campbell and HHS Secretary Alexander Azar note that the company running the Homestead location has received government contracts totaling more than $545 million. The letters point to a series of sexual abuse complaints at the facility and cite a CBS News report documenting the rapid hiring of employees who were granted a government waiver allowing them to bypass Florida's child abuse and neglect background check system.

BY MIRREN GIDDA

Spend Money to Make Money
On August 19, the day after Yates' announcement, GEO Corrections Holdings Inc., a subsidiary of the GEO Group, donated $100,000 to the pro-Trump PAC Rebuilding America Now. Then, on November 1 —seven days before the presidential election— it gave another $125,000 to the organization.

In addition, GEO Corrections Holding Inc. had donated $200,000 to the Senate Leadership Fund, a Republican PAC, on September 27, 2016, and $100,000 to the Conservative Solutions PAC on April 17, 2015.

The more these "for profit corporations" crowd people into alleged "temporary shelters" the more money they make. They charge the Federal Government (aka We The tax-paying People) for every day refugees and US citizens (aka children born in the USA) are detained.

While Caliburn insists that it only runs “temporary emergency shelters,” critics are questioning how “temporary” applies when children are being held for weeks. According to a report from the New York Times, 1,162 out of about 2,300 children had been held at the center for at least 20 days. The longest held child was a Guatemalan boy, who had been held there for more than 122 days, or four months.

The report is even bleaker when it comes to facility conditions: Children at the shelter complain about loud noises and a lack of privacy, and although most shelters often take the children for trips outside the perimeters for a change of scenery, most children at Homestead do not get to leave the facility unless they are heading to a medical appointment. While government-run shelter must follow strict standards — such as releasing a child after 20 days or having a strict vetting process for staff — Homestead does not have to abide by such rules because it is privately owned.
