My uncle had collies, two of them, brothers. One late winter day, they went to an small adjacent lake and one fell through thin ice and was in trouble. His brother barked and made such a fuss that someone heard and got to him in time. One family member looking after another...

It seems that little dog could have jumped up and gotten out of the culvert, but he just didn't want to. So Mom had to punish him and get him out herself.

I, too, was worried about choking the little one...a close look shows it is a harness. I don't believe it would have been harmed..I enjoyed it more once I figured that out.
