HAMDEN Vandals have destroyed a natural phenomenon in Hamdens woods that had become an iconic landmark.
The Door Tree, named because one tree growing into another had made a doorway-like arch, was found Wednesday cut up and destroyed, according to the executive board of the Hamden Historical Society.
A supporter of the society contacted a board member Wednesday because they were concerned they couldnt find the tree, the release said. When the board member went to visit the tree hours later, they found the 150-year-old tree had been knocked down and cut into pieces with a chainsaw, according to the release.

tree had been knocked down and cut into pieces with a chainsaw, according to the release.
The societys board doesnt know exactly when the damage occurred.
For many years it has been feared the tree would be the target of vandalism due to its remote location, in a small valley about fifty feet off New Road near Clarks Pond, the board said.
The Police Department and Regional Water Authority, which owns the land where the tree stood, have been notified and Mayor Curt B. Leng expressed shock and anger when notified earlier today of the trees destruction, the board said.
Ted Norris, vice president of RWA Asset Management, has assured the historical society that RWA police, who work hand in hand with Hamden police, will investigate the destruction of the landmark and will aggressively seek to identify and prosecute those responsible, the release said.
The tree was featured several times in Ripleys Believe it or Not, and in Rachel Hartleys The History of Hamden Connecticut -1786-1959.

(28,117 posts)Just viewed a suggested youtube of a poor young dog who'd had his 4 legs and tail cut off and was left to die. People who found him took him to a vet but they were unable to save him.
Beneath the video was this: "People are Evil."
I agree with a poster above, these evil, sick people are MAGAts types.

(4,858 posts)...they've been cutting down trees all over southern CT like Vandals the past few years, in the name of preventing power outages. I can't tell you how many lovely yards I've seen denuded of beautiful trees because of these people. On a slightly more serious note, I've walked past--and under--that tree many, many times. This is a damned shame. Hope they catch the assholes...

I do also hope that the fine people of Hamden are just as upset about children in cages as they are about their tree.

An Alabama fan who poisoned Toomers Oak Trees at Auburn University opened up about why he did it, saying he just doesn't like the Crimson Tide's biggest rival.
Harvey Updyke, Jr. poisoned the 80-year-old trees in 2011 and was eventually busted after he called into the Paul Finebaum radio show admitting the crime. He also left a phone message to an Auburn professor saying he knew who poisoned the tree.
Updyke Jr. pleaded guilty to a Class C felony of criminal damage of an agricultural facility, was ordered to serve at least six months in jail, spend five years on supervised probation and ordered to pay $800,000 in restitution.
Updyke's probation recently ended allowing him to speak to t
