Deli Owner "Free side when you say send her back!"

John Canesa, the owner of Canesa's Brooklyn Heros deli in Clayton, posted the comment to his personal Facebook page. "Meatballs made with beef today in case we offend any of our overly sensitive pork haters!! Free side when you say send her back! #canesasbrooklynheros," he wrote.

https://www.sfgate.com/bayarea/article/clayton-canesas-brooklyn-heros-send-her-back-trump-14111966.php

Sara Zendenham, the KTVU reporter who broke the story, wrote on Twitter that she was in touch with Canesa on Saturday. She reported that Canesa said that he's a father of three and he's been dealing with threats since his Facebook post.

She said he sent her a link to a Facebook live he said he did addressing the controversy, but the link is no longer working. It seems that his personal Facebook page has been deactivated or made private.

And, yeah, I am an American of Italian descent, so that was facetious. The only thing that pisses me off more than my relatives and other Italian-Americans thinking like this guy is knowing that he took the Absolutely Best Thing about being Italian--the food--and made it about hate.

Canesa, perhaps, most likely Italian.

He should read the immigration of his people here.

https://www.loc.gov/teachers/classroommaterials/presentationsandactivities/presentations/immigration/italian8.html

Attacks on Italians were not limited to the printed page, however. From the late 1880s, anti-immigrant societies sprang up around the country, and the Ku Klux Klan saw a spike in membership. Catholic churches and charities were vandalized and burned, and Italians attacked by mobs. In the 1890s alone, more than 20 Italians were lynched.

One of the bloodiest episodes took place in New Orleans in 1891. When the chief of police was found shot to death on the street one night, the mayor blamed “Sicilian gangsters” and rounded up more than 100 Sicilian Americans. Eventually, 19 were put on trial and, as the nation’s Italian Americans watched nervously, were found not guilty for lack of evidence. Before they could be freed, however, a mob of 10,000 people, including many of New Orleans’ most prominent citizens, broke into the jail. They dragged 11 Sicilians from their cells and lynched them, including two men jailed on other offenses. Italians worldwide were outraged, but the U.S. press generally approved of the action. It was the largest single mass lynching in U.S. history.

Anti-immigrant sentiment continued until the 1920s, when severe restrictions on immigration were put into place by the U.S. Congress. When this legislation passed, the great era of Italian immigration came to an end.

We are an nation of immigrants and our ancestors came here at one point in time. I think people should reread history before they open their mouths to spew hate.

The most recent immigrants get to be treated like shit by the ones who got here a generation before. Irish, German, Italian. All the European groups took their turns except the English, I guess.

One of these centuries, maybe we can fix that, but maybe it's human nature to want to hate on someone.

I have done a bit of reading about the Italian-American experience. The first wave of "dagos/guineas/wops" really took it on the chin from Irish-Americans. The Irish-Americans had come over in large numbers a generation or so before. From "Irish need not apply" to becoming a force to be reckoned with in institutions like the Catholic Church and local police and fire departments, those children of immigrants used the same step-on-the-lower-guy's-neck strategy.

I don't know if it's human nature to want to hate on someone; but it is a human need to belong to a group. The advantages the group confers on the individual can mean the difference between life and death. So, yeah, group-think is easy to slip into.

A good book to read on the subject is "How the Irish Became White." It's a little dry to read; the title is "sexier" than the writing style. But it really addresses the issue that "whiteness" is a social status and not a physical descriptor. As Conan O'Brian once said, "The Irish are the [physically] whitest people on earth."

Another book that addresses this subject in its contents is "Everything But Money", written by Sam Levenson in 1966. I found that on my parents' bookshelf when I was a young girl. Unfortunately, I think my parents skipped the parts where Levenson discusses why some people don't feel like "somebody" if everyone else is also allowed to be "somebody."

Oh, and by the way, I had to look up the proper spelling of "guinea" for this little post*. According to whoever wrote that exerpt, "Guinea [is] The most vile racial slur that can be used against an Italian-American. . . [it implies] that Italian-Americans are non-whites. . ."

Just reading that makes me want to use a very vile word. Being white isn't some impressive acomplishment. I'm proud to be Italian, but I am more proud of being a human being who doesn't think that way.

* Yes, I know that this is not a "little post". Almost nothing that I write ever is.

That's right over the hill from where my folks live and where one of my best friends has lived for 20+ years.

It used to be a backwater when I was a kid but it's MASSIVELY grown, and property values skyrocketed. It's a beautiful little boojie area nowadays.

It's also pretty damn liberal.

This was a REALLY REALLY dumb thing to say, when running a business in Clayton ... rent there ain't cheap, and there isn't many places for businesses to set up shop.

Who are a CORRUPT AS FUCK multi-billionaire real-estate development family .. who happen to be Italian ... like this guy. They are straight-up mobsters, not even kidding.

He probably knows them ... maybe even family ... I'd wager they are his landlords, and he likely knows his spot is safe no matter what.

Course, one does not want to fall TOO FAR into arrears with a group like the Seeno's ... which is probably why he's begun pleading about his family and such ... if I were to hazard a guess ...

but it needs the same amount of coverage. They are anti-democracy, anti-liberty, constitution hating un-Americans. They want to re-write the constitution to change the values that our founding fathers intended. They want to bury the free speech rights of all who do not agree with their ideology. They are fascists. I do not know why every time they yell "socialism" we aren't yelling back "fascism". There is way more evidence they want to turn the U.S. into a fascist state than we want to turn it into a socialist state.
