It is very doubtful at this time. The country is very polarized and divided.
If we operate under that premise, there are no pleasant choices.
We can only do what we think is best for our country. In our hearts, we know that Donald Trump's inconsistent and irrational way of governing cannot come to a good end. It is based on lies and deception. It hides information from the people. With each passing day, our country is less than the day before. The stock market cannot save our freedoms and liberties.
In the end, we have to decide if we wish to stay on this road we are on?
Or do we wish to take a detour and do what we know is right in our hearts? The Trump followers are lost souls. The country cannot survive with their philosophy of life or politics. We cannot "normalize" such dangerous and aberrant behaviors. It is wrong. It must be confronted.
Our choice is to confront it now with Congressional oversight, including possible impeachment, or confront it later at the ballot box.
Or confront it in the streets? That is the direction we are headed.
We cannot surrender to the dangerous and dark desires of autocrats and criminals.
It is time for America to make a decision.
You can't reason with retrumplicans.

I wish he would just STFU. He is just treating America and Americans like shit.

[A significant economic downturn will change perspectives at some point though].

(19,006 posts)Winning is all that matters. You aren't going to reach the Trump Die Hards, don't even bother with them. There is a number of his supporters that can be convinced to stay home, vote 3rd party, or even vote for the Dem, that's all we should care about.

(56,828 posts)In the midst of the primary wars and our Congressional reps shooting down impeachment last week, the Trump attacks on four women of color in Congress brought universal condemnation from Democrats.
Every single Democrat voted for the resolution condemning Trump - including conservative Democrats on the right like Dan Lipinski and Henry Cuellar.

(9,959 posts)He likes violence, as shown from countless rallies where he encouraged supporters to punch protesters or hurt them. I still shudder from the comment he made during a 2016 rally that maybe someone should exercise their second amendment right to take care of Hillary. His rhetoric on immigrants inspired a follower to murder eleven Jews at worship in their synagogue. He is now putting a target on Rep. Omar especially. She triggers all his racist attitudes as female, brown, and Muslim.
Trumps Greenville rally showed just how much open racism has grown in the past couple of years. Racism has always been here, it was just better contained before Trump, who has made hatred of minorities a hallmark of his presidency. You have summarized where we are as a countryand our options. I do not think Trump will be impeached unless Robert Mueller decides to be a real patriot and sys clearly that he would have indicted Trump for criminal obstruction of justice had he not been prevented from doing so by the DOJ. I have little faith that he will do so.
So that leaves 2020. We have to reach independent voters and younger voters. I will vote for whichever candidate emerges as our nominee, but I really hope it is someone who can also appeal to independents and young people. It may sound like hysterical projection, but I think if Trump wins re-election, we have seen the end of the country and our democracy.

(25,183 posts)polarized for my entire adult life. Starting with disillusionment over the no-win Vietnam War, Americans have split into factions, and have grown further apart as the decades have marched on.
What do you mean by "confront it in the streets"? Rioting, such as what we saw in the 1960's? That was a key factor into making us into two Americas.
I believe there is a serious chance that we will split into two nations at the end of Trump's time in office, unless that ending is the result of his natural death.

(63,221 posts)They want chaos and violence. They thrive on the polarization of this nation. Until we can get rid of them, it's pointless. Trump is out there preaching hate propaganda daily and people are going to get killed because of it. It will only get worse until he is gone for good.

(38,414 posts)It would mean that she would need to become "political" and she has said she is strongly against this, but she could unite us. And, a certain first lady, Eleanor Roosevelt was a leader before her husband died. She was strongly in favor of worker's rights and women's rights and other such causes. So, Michelle would not be the first wife of a president to take the lead. We need her right now. Yes, Michelle Obama could unite the great majority of us. Yes, this would be very unusual, and the right wing would try to destroy her, but it could not. She has stature and grace. And could take the right wing on with honesty and strength. Most important, we need her NOW. Since she would not be running for President of the U.S.A. (that would be a given) she could lead us till Trump is gone. And Trump will be gone next year. He will go down worse than any other president.

(2,840 posts)I believe that's when the polarisation between the two opposing camps became unbridgable. We were never going to accept George W. Bush or any Republican anywhere ever, and they felt the same about us.
Read the comments here and on conservative sites. Each says, "We can't compromise with evil." I believe DUers absolutely mean that when they post it here, and I've no doubt the other side means it too.
So, no. I don't think there's a Democrat or Republican or independent alive today that could unite this country. Heck, I don't think even a military invasion by a foreign power could unite us anymore. I believe that if we were invaded today, there'd be a fair number of Democrats/progressives who would root for the invaders if it meant the end of this administration.
An amicable divorce of these once-United States is probably the best we could hope for, IMO.
