<snip>
President Trump said Monday he could end the war in Afghanistan in a week, but that doing so would cause millions of deaths.
Instead, the president said during a White House meeting with Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan that he wants Pakistans help to bring an end to the nearly 18-year-old conflict.
I could win that war in a week. I just dont want to kill 10 million people, Trump told reporters, alluding to what he said were military plans. If I wanted to win that war, Afghanistan would be wiped off the face of the earth. ... It would be over in literally, in 10 days.

(3,051 posts)That is one way to win a war -- total annihilation. Worked in Germany and Japan.
But, obviously, at what cost?
The half-wars we've been getting into since Vietnam (or really Korea) really are a waste of blood and treasure (on all sides). They don't work.
And, no, this is not a call for nuking Afghanistan or total war.
It's a call to not get into war (although Afghanistan was somewhat unavoidable).

(2,231 posts)No sane person would so flippantly discuss an option that is obviously to use nukes.
That said, good military advisers will explain all of the options, including the one that should never be used. Unfortunately, Trump is the exception. They should stop advising him of options that everyone else is smart enough to know is a horrible idea, because even if he won't actually USE that option, his inability to control his mouth will invariable go right to that, thinking it will scare others. Well, it does, I'm just not sure his intention was to scare Americans instead of the Taliban (who probably think less of him than we do, if that's possible).
