The Agriculture Department issued a proposed rule Tuesday that curtails so-called broad-based categorical eligibility, which makes it easier for Americans with somewhat higher incomes and more savings to participate in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, the formal name for food stamps.
It is the administration's latest step to clamp down on the food stamps program, which covers 38 million Americans, and other public assistance services. It wants to require more poor people to work for SNAP benefits, and it is looking to change the way the poverty threshold is calculated, a move that could strip many low-income residents of their federal benefits over time.
Broad-based categorical eligibility allows states to streamline the food stamps application process for folks who qualify for certain benefits under the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program. Some 40 states, plus the District of Columbia, use this option, which lets them eliminate the asset test and raise one of the income thresholds.

(19,058 posts)Whenever some Right Winger brings up food stamps, I talk about one of my oldest friends who is a Navy Vet who saw combat in 2 conflicts and sustained injuries during them and has other health issues that make him fully disabled just shy of 50 years old. He's at the mercy of the Food Stamp police and for profit hospitals that are now his only option in rural Northern Michigan. It seems like every year they take a bit of his food allowance away. He's already raising rabbits so he can have enough meat to survive on.
My friend did everything he was supposed to do in life, he fought for his country, learned a skilled trade and worked hard until he could no longer work. His reward is that he gets to live in a shack in the middle of nowhere by himself while relying on his government to pay for his food and allow him to barely eke out a miserable existence. At every turn when he asks for help he's met with questioning eyes and suspicion and sometime outright hostility. He's been yelled at, denied help, and even reported to the police for daring to speak up about his medical bills or dwindling food allowance. there is no dignity in his life, he lives in squalor, a forgotten soldier who has been targeted by the Right.
So when Cons talk about Food Stamps, know that they are talking about my friend too, someone who like most on food stamps, deserves much better in this land of plenty.
