Later on that day, another, more innocent, and patriotic explanation arose. I had to force myself to believe the Slate explanation, because to believe otherwise confirms some of my worst fears regarding republican extremists.

(43,872 posts)It's not as if the Republicans have gone out of their way to avoid the worst elements of American society.
It's not as if they've rejected Sheriff Joe Arpaio and their lot.
Republicans have a well established, long standing pattern of hatred and mistrust of minorities.
So much so, that it is hard not to interpret anything they do from that perspective.
