NYT: European Conservatives Steer Clear of Romney (UK paper: Mitt the Twit)

The Sun delivered its verdict on Mitt Romney’s London visit on July 27.

Europe-bashing by the Republican candidate may go down well on the campaign trail and on the convention floor in Tampa. But the barbs he has been flinging at the old Continent are beginning to pall among Europeans, even those who should be his party’s natural allies.

Mr. Romney has been portraying Barack Obama as a Europeanizer since his victory speech at the New Hampshire primary in January at which he said of the president:

“He wants to turn America into a European-style entitlement society. We want to ensure that we remain a free and prosperous land of opportunity. This president takes his inspiration from the capitals of Europe; we look to the cities and small towns of America.”

Axel Poniatowski, a legislator from France’s right-of-center U.M.P. — former President Nicolas Sarkozy’s party — told Paris Match: “The values of the American right and the French right have diverged considerably in the past 15 years.”

"“The values of the American right and the French right have diverged considerably in the past 15 years.”" The values of the American right have diverged from those of practically any sane person in the world over the past 30 years.
