I saw the folded piece of paper under my wiper blade as I was leaving the grocery store last night. I could tell it wasn't an advertisement because it was on a piece of lined notebook paper.
For a moment I thought I was a "sorry I hit your car" note and my stomach got a little sick. Then I read the scrap of paper and I felt even worse. It said "When it happens well (sic) remember who voted for him. You and your family will be the first ones eaten." I have an Obama-Biden bumper sticker on my car.
I immediately faked a long laugh and wiped my eyes with the back of my hand, like I had teared up from laughing so hard. Then I loaded my groceries in the back of my car, alternating between forced grins and fake chuckling. The parking lot was still full and I did this in case the asshole was still watching me.
On the way home, I considered what kind of mindset would possess someone to do this. They have to believe that there will be an inevitable collapse in society and that liberals will be on the wrong end of what caused it. And that we will not be able to defend ourselves from the retribution we deserve.
"You and your family will be the first ones eaten." What a weird and sick thing to think, much less put on paper.
I gave the car the walk-around inspection as I was unloading at the house. They didn't key my car or vandalize it. Cold comfort. We are surrounded by some utterly crazy sons of bitches. Over-medicated, under-educated. I fear for my little girls and this world they're inheriting.
I don't know what the point of this post was except to say be wary of them. Some of them are mentally balanced on the edge of a knife.

(29,065 posts)I bet it is. I live in the blue state of Illinois, but the further removed from the city one gets -- in this case, Chicago -- the
more conservative the area gets. That being said, I imagine that even our rural areas are not as "conservative" as a red state like Tennessee, although I could be wrong on that.
Is that your state of origin, or did you (and your family/spouse) move there for a job or something?

Make them worry, for a change. And, make them think twice about escalating the threat.

(13,141 posts)fyi in case it happens again: fake laughs are easy to spot,
a sign that their terror is working.
So you might start growling and hopping around, something
unexpected like that. I don't think you need to be worried
but you are right, there are crazy people, and people get
randomly killed, and not-randomly killed, and nobody knows
when random will strike. But I don't think we need to be
afraid of zombie tea partiers.
edit: my car was egged recently. I don't have any bumper
stickers. If I had an Obama sticker, I'd have assumed there
was a connection. But there are many assholes out there
who just like to leave zombie notes and throw eggs at
people's cars because it gives them a thrill.

(31,798 posts)I'm just getting back from two weeks in Italy (husband is from there) visiting his family in Calabria and then a few days in Rome. The positive energy I experienced in conversations with Italian citizens regarding this administration gave me such a GREAT and positive feeling.
Then to read this - and have it fade away . . . this is why my very progressive yet extremely protective husband does not want Obama/Biden stickers on my car this year. He thinks 'they' - the 'others' are going to get super sick and twisted this time around.

(42 posts)I have not put an Obama sticker on my car this year...although I had one on my car in 2008. Too many right wing crazies now...I don't want to come out and find my tires slashed or worse.... I see very few cars sporting bumper stickers for either candidate.

(18,672 posts)I can't imagine the warped mind that would write such a thing. That person must have a lot of hate, but he/she isn't the only one. It's something that is bothering me. When our President is re-elected, some of these people are going to remove the pleasant masks they have pasted on their faces and become downright ugly.

(73 posts)Unfortunately, many people tune into "hate radio" to be told how to think, and the message is quite clear. If you do not think like me, you are my enemy. When someone walks into a church with a gun, he is not shooting peaceful reverent people, he is shooting the enemy.

But a note saying basically, when the shit goes down, you liberals will be the first ones to get killed... I've got $150 bucks worth of groceries I'm not going to let spoil so I can let a cop jot it down on the back of his hand an hour later when he shows up.

(25 posts)I live in Florida and while Allen West isn't my congressman, mine still is a republican. I don't feel comfortable displaying my political affiliation here in the least in avoidance of precisely the experience you've described. Most of the placards around town are for republican candidates, and with the itchy trigger fingers that abound lately I'm just apprehensive to "come out" so-to-speak. I'm sorry that the ugly side of human had to display itself in such a way to you. Do be careful.

reflection
(6,286 posts)I don't own a gun. I don't have the temperament for it. I anger easily, I think I would freeze at the moment required to use one, and I tend to sleep very heavy, which would make me very groggy were someone to break in. I wish I were the sort of person who felt comfortable using a gun, but I'm just not, so I try to stay in shape and be smart about what I do and where I go. But I have no illusions that I would be a match for someone who was armed. We've talked about it as a family and we're all in agreement that we're just going to have to take our chances as an non-gun-owning group and try to minimize risk whenever possible. But yeah, if the proverbial shit hits the fan, I think I would regret my decision. I don't know if this makes sense or not, I hope it does.

(12,081 posts)I'm a buddhist so I I believe in non violent resistance, but I am also a mother and I have to say it would be awfully hard for me to just sit and watch my children be hurt. I honestly don't know what I would do. We do own a gun because my husband has no doubt about what he would do. He would shoot. When my daughter was an infant, she and I were home alone. I was in the very back room cleaning. I heard a noise and came out into the living room. There were two men in my living room stealing one our Christmas presents from under the tree. They did not expect anyone to be home so they fled. I called the cops and grabbed a knife from the kitchen in case they came back. I don't know if I would have used it or not. I suppose if they had tried to go into my daughter's room I very well might have. It was then that my husband made sure we had a gun in the house. It's hard to reconcile being a buddhist and a mother. As a mother I want things for my children. As a buddhist I know wanting things leads to disappointment. It's a difficult balance.

(14,177 posts)First they steal your pension, then they eat your brain...Sorry, that is awful. I don't know what I would have done. I might have been very angry or I might have laughed for real, depends on my mood. I don't think these people can possibly be serious. Do they really think that getting rid of the safety net will make the world a better place? Do they really think when people have absolutely nothing that they won't turn to criminal activity? They better hope that Romney doesn't win. He will make Reagan look compassionate.
BlueNinja
(25 posts)... with rhetoric like this. When you have many people saying that the country is as polarized as it was around the time of the Civil War, we really need to take these things seriously. I can feel it. There are a lot of people itching for a fight. I don't know what the answer is as far as what is to be done, but to just shrug it off and never think of it again would be a mistake I think. I just don't know what the answer is, and I really don't know where we're headed. This is the kind of shit that makes me want to throw up.
Kalidurga
(14,177 posts)But, I grew up in a very bad place. The fighting was constant and frequently physical. So, it is very difficult for me to take people like this seriously. If anyone of these yahoos tried to start a fight, I am afraid that unless they had some kind of weapon my "training" would kick in. That's just how it is. But, I really do find these asshats to be amusing. Lets hope it stays that way because when I am not amused, things can get ugly.

(823 posts)I can't help but be saddened by this. Instead of really laughing it off as a little good-natured joshing, one's immediate reaction in this political climate is to feel threatened. This, unfortunately, highlights the extremism that is taking joy out of life and making us all paranoid and suspicious. I am no exception and it makes me long for the way things used to be or the way I think things used to be.

(1,453 posts)but I'll repeat it:
I had a du bumpersticker on my car. I turned onto a road that starts at 30 mph and moves to 50 after about
1/2 mile. A very nice pickup truck turned right after me, and in the 30 mph zone he got on my bumper. I saw
him do this, and kind of ignored it for a few seconds, maintaining 30 mph. Then he went from my bumper to
halfway inside my g-damned car. Kid you not--he was 1/4 inch away from me. I made a split-second decision
that getting tapped at 30 mph with my seatbelt on wouldn't kill me, but it would give that fuckhead a general
message--if you fuck with people, they might fuck with you back. Besides, my car was worth less than his
deductible, and he knew it.
He backed WAAAAAY off.
This is Kansas, btw, and it sucks. I've since removed all bumperstickers (my car was keyed with an Obama
sticker on it in 2008, but my learning curve is pretty damned long...)
