Three fraternity brothers at the University of Mississippi have been suspended and are possibly facing federal charges for taking a photo in front of a bullet-riddled sign honoring slain civil rights icon Emmett Till while holding a shotgun and AR-15 semi-automatic rifle.
The photo is on Instagram with hundreds of likes, and no one said a thing, says a complaint filed with the UM Office of Student Conduct.
The Mississippi Center for Investigative Reporting, which is a member of the ProPublica Local Reporting Network, reviewed the complaint and obtained a copy of the picture in question, which was taken earlier this year.
Ole Miss student and Kappa Alpha Order member Ben LeClere posted it on his private page in March and is reportedly the one holding a shotgun.
Two of his fraternity brothers, John Lowe and another young man who has yet to be identified, can be seen posing alongside him the latter of whom is toting the AR-15.
A fourth person, said to be the photographer, may have also been with the trio, the complaint says.

(7,715 posts)Study for tests! You're coming from Ole Miss, so you need to work hard to get anywhere in life. When you do stuff like this, you set your chances back a million miles. GROW UP.
I knew a lot of KAs when I was in college. None of them were as stupid as these idiots.
Sorry to any DU'ers from U of M....I doubt any of you did this.

(56,582 posts)They have a reputation in Mississippi. We used to say it started out as Kappa Kappa Kappa Alpha but the first two Kappas burned off during a cross-burning rehearsal.

(7,411 posts)or they did when I was in college. It involved the men dressing in Confederate uniforms, the women in period attire as they parade across campus, horses included. Sometimes it involved cannons they would pull along and fire once back at the frat house.
They're odious.

(58,785 posts)I'd guess futures are most likely to involve employment by one of their dad's friends in the local Lion's Club.

(31,261 posts)They will be employed in the family business. The fraternity at UF was a ratsnest of entitled rich White boys when I went there.

Chances are good enough that that's where they were headed anyway.

(11,949 posts)It was not a confed state, although really red now, and every year they would have some big shindig where the members would dress up in confederate uniforms and their dates in hoop gowns. Ridiculous.
And the chapter had a civil war style cannon on the front yard. Pointed North, of course. Think they all do. Or did.
One year, people say, a person I may or may not know took action. While that party was going on. He backed his Ford F-250 dually up while an unknown couple of friends hooked a log chain around the cannon. Then proceeded to drag the fucking thing down the street. All second hand knowledge, of course.
Unfortunately this was not a strike against racism. No doubt the participants were just as racist as the KAs. Although I have it on good authority that at least one of the people involved has had a total change of heart.
It was their arrogance that was hated.
This was well over 30 years ago. Im sure the Statute of Limitations has run out.
That cannon was remounted on a big concrete footer. For all I know it is still there today. Ill check next time I visit.

(22,976 posts)This kind of mindless RACISM and bloody ignorance CANNOT be allowed to continue. These worthless fucks need to have the book thrown at them, assuming Mississippi cops and judges arent secretly cheering them on.
I dont see the U.S. as it stands lasting much longer. Not when its been split into two completely different realities, one being fascist/authoritarian, the other, liberal/democracy. The two are polar opposites and have their ideology baked in.
Compromise has been made impossible by the Trump administration and its lapdogs. The system favors these neo-fascists (the right-wing judgeships, 22 states under top-to-bottom Republican control, the fucking outmoded Electoral College, conspiring with Russian operatives, a media more concerned with ratings, rather than the damage it does, etc.)
As the 2020 election approaches, the Republican pushback will be operating at maximum strength, most of it decrying the boogeymen of socialism, reverse racism, immigrants, and womens rights.
The only hope is that there are enough concerned Americans in the swing states to vote Democratic in a free and fair election. And its abundantly clear to any sentient being that Republicans DO NOT play by the rules, or even by the law.
