Key Points
Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., is raising alarm bells about an $83.7 billion investment in his home state pledged by Chinas state-owned energy giant.
When you put that in comparison to the state budget of West Virginia, our state budget only goes over $4 billion a year, so something doesnt make sense here, and we cannot find out what their intent is, he says.
The deal was announced in 2017 as part of $250 billion in business agreements reached between the U.S. and China in connection with President Donald Trumps visit to the country..................................

(7 posts)I think its a real investment to actually mine lots of coal.
But it will be the mountain top removal method that devastates vast acreages, turning the mountain scenery into a series of barren mesas with huge lakes of mining debris. These scars will last forever.
But China needs coal and lots of it. And the poor folks living in WV have sold their mineral rights generations ago. Now they will be forced to flee the onslaught of the coal machine. 84 Billion will kill off whole counties. These counties will be depopulated even further with no future job potential. But hey, money to be made by the republicans. Theydon't care if its a communist country, just money money money.

(7 posts)BTW, coal mining and burning is the second highest source of mercury in sea water. We can't eat too much carnivore fish because of all the mercury they contain.
The US doesn't contribute much anymore because of the rules to remove mercury, but China doesn't have such rules. They are the number one contributor to sea water mercury.
