(Bloomberg) -- Donald Trumps currency policy is looking as chaotic as his trade war.
Hours after Larry Kudlow, the presidents top economic adviser, ruled out the prospect of intervening to weaken the dollar, Trump weighed in from the Oval Office.
I didnt say Im not going to do something on the dollar, he told reporters Friday.
The episode, playing out in public, revealed the extent to which the Trump administration has considered the rare move of a currency intervention. It also exposed divisions within the presidents team over whether to take such an unusual step -- some of the same rifts that split officials on the use of tariffs in the trade war.
It also comes days before the Federal Reserve, which would play a crucial role in any intervention, holds a policy meeting at which its expected to lower interest rates by a quarter percentage point. Trump has repeatedly pressured Fed Chairman Jerome Powell to lower borrowing costs and touched on those concerns as he discussed the dollar Friday.
