Dan Quayle: If Democrats 'put up some total left winger' Donald Trump will be re-elected

Former Vice President Dan Quayle said Thursday there are such extremes from both sides serving in Washington he's not sure he'd be considered a conservative in 2019 —and he's not surprised there is dissent in D.C.

"We're going through this phase right now, both left and right, you send the extremes down there, no wonder they don't get along," Quayle said. "Used to be center left, center right and I was always considered a conservative. I still (am), but i don't know in today's political environment where I'd fit in. Some of the conservatives probably wouldn't think I was conservative, but I am."

Quayle, an Indianapolis native who served as second in command under the late President George H.W. Bush from 1989 to 1993, appeared as a guest on the "Query & Schultz" (1260-AM) Fox Sports radio show as part of the program's "Catching Up With" series.

The nearly 30-minute interview began with talk from Quayle about sports — those irate Maryland senators he had to face after the Colts left Baltimore for Indianapolis, and Quayle's displeasure with Indiana high school class basketball.

But the conversation soon veered to politics, with Quayle seemingly comparing Bush and himself with the current administration of President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence.

I know, nobody cares what Quayle says.

I expect more to speak out. They are starting with those not currently in office ( this is an old tradition-similar to how when active military have deep concerns about policy but can't speak out publicly, they get retired military do speak out instead).

They would like Trump and virulent Trumpism gone, but would prefer Democrats do it for them so they can field another candidate and possibly win in 2020. I believe their fall back position is for Democrats to win the presidency in 2020 but be limited in what they can accomplish.

The 2020 president will be facing huge multiple crises-speeded up climate change and food, water, flooding and migration pressures, economic mess from Trump policies, balance of power/foreign policy mess from Trump policies.

Is it because Democrats will not vote for the "far left"?

Or is it because Republicans, regardless of how much they dislike Trump, will flock to the polls to defeat a "far-left" Democrat?

Or is it all of the above?

Give us more specifics.

I don't think that there is a current candidate, even Bernie Sanders, who is "far left", but the Republicans will paint EVERY SINGLE ONE as such because there has been a reflexive fear of "the left" baked into the cake of American politics since the 1920's. FDR was called a radical and a plot to remove him from office was hatched by industrialists, including the Bush grandpa Prescott. The "Red Scare" is ingrained in the population and while "socialism" doesn't have quite the career killing qualities as before, there are plenty of people who shudder in fear when talk about redistribution and flattening out of society are mentioned. It's okay to trim away around the edges but DO NOT mess with capitalism. Don't take my stuff!!

Dems ran a barely-left-of-center candidate in 2016 who was arguably the most qualified candidate ever, but GOPers tore her to shreds.

If Quayle and other Repubs like him can't even get a candidate they like in their own party to win, then why should we accommodate them now so they agree to help our candidate win?
