http://finance.yahoo.com/news/drink-less-more-billionaire-tells-152654355.htmlGina Rinehart seems to court controversy - from her family lawsuits to her battles with Australian media.
Now, the Australian mining heiress, worth $19 billion dollars and earlier this year thought to be the world's richest woman, has sparked another controversy in her latest column in Australian Resources and Investment magazine. ... Rinehart rails against class warfare and says the non-rich should stop attacking the rich and go to work.
"There is no monopoly on becoming a millionaire," she writes. "If you're jealous of those with more money, don't just sit there and complain. Do something to make more money yourself - spend less time drinking, or smoking and socializing and more time working."
... Rinehart's remarks drew immediate fire from senior Australian ministers. Treasurer Wayne Swan said in a statement that Rinehart had delivered "an insult to the millions of Australian workers who go to work and slog it out to feed the kids and pay the bills."

(5,842 posts)Given the word "heiress" is used in this article I gather Gina's efforts to become worth $19 billion dollars involved her either being born or marrying into her wealth.

(16,230 posts)She did nothing to earn that $19 billion other than being born, and then she basically implies that those not so fortunate are that way because they're just a bunch of layabouts.
I wonder what she does all day.

(12,649 posts)anyone could. Most 2nd Generation Rich Kids think that. (2GRKs are children of those who have already made the money - the "heirs" and "heiresses", not kids who experianced poverty and struggle while the money was being made.)
Since she never experienced the actual process it took to make that sort of money, she has no clue as to the special circumstances the parent that made that money experienced that made all that "hard work" and "sacrifice" profitable.
Like playing the lottery. People normally have to "work hard" to have a roof, three daily meals for their family, and utilities on with the opportunity to have a few little luxuries and still not starve to death when they get old. It's not easy balancing a budget when one has interests and family to consider. What is not recognized is that they work just as hard if not harder in most cases then the guy who got lucky and had the opportunity that only comes along once in a while to realize a way to turn a life of average income into millions in profit. For most, it's a matter of meeting and impressing the right person at the right time to get a chance for responsibility, self-promotion or celebrity.
That's not "hard work" as most people know it, that's a mix of pure luck and having a talented personality - or the persistent stalking to find the right patron to ride up the ladder of success.

(20,277 posts)This indicates that she hasn't done much work (if any) herself.
Maybe she should shut her pie hole and do some good with her 19 billion.

(15,953 posts)If global warming is going to be the disaster it's predicted to be, the world will not be able to afford the privileged rich anymore. Judging from what we've seen this summer, I don't think we'll have to wait for the end of the century for the shit to hit the fan. I give it another 10 years and we'll see storm surge flooding at high tide in coastal cities.

Give it another 10 years? By then drones will be sci-fi by our standards today.
