A day after a 68-year-old man was shot as he sat on a bench outside a Northeast Miami-Dade synagogue waiting for the daily prayer, the community is rallying to help him in his recovery and called for greater security in the area.
Police did not say Monday whether the shooting would be considered a hate crime.
But Salzman labeled the shooter a bully.
It does not take a criminal mastermind to shoot an elderly person sitting on a bench. It does not take terrorist to try and kill someone isolated and defenseless, he wrote in the post. It takes a coward. It takes someone without courage to attack an elderly defenseless man sitting in front of a place of sanctuary. It takes someone devoid of humanity to perform such a disgusting and repulsive action.

My back yard. North Dade used to be a sanctuary for Jews fleeing discrimination. Now, nowhere is safe.

At the time that I am writing this letter, the situation which occurred in North Miami Beach outside the Young Israel of Greater Miami tonight is well known. I will, however, review it briefly for those who have heard conflicting reports.
At approximately 6:35pm this evening, a man in his sixties was sitting on one of the benches outside our synagogue. The services were not slated to begin for another 45 minutes, but he would frequently sit outside and wait. A dark colored car stopped in front of the synagogue and fired numerous times. I am told that he was shot six times, including four in the leg.
I do not know who it was who heard the shots and called the ambulance, but fortunately someone did. He was taken to Aventura Medical Center. As I write this, I believe that he is still in surgery.
I have received a number of telephone calls, text messages, and emails from people in the community, across south Florida, the United States, and Israel. These people have expressed shock at the event, compassion for the victim, and their desire to react. I have been contacted by the media and asked for my opinion if this was a hate crime. People are scared. I have received calls asking if it is safe to go to the synagogue....
