This from my cousin's facebook page today (she grew up in Wisconsin but now lives in Ohio):
"That does it. I usually vote republican, but having grown up near Janesville, I know that Ryan was flat out lying about the GM plant closure there. When he could so easily tell a bald-faced lie (and, btw, even though the entire plant didn't shut down until early 2009, the upcoming closure was announced to the workers in Dec 2008), I feel that he has lost all credibility. Now I don't even know what else he is lying about. I also see that the republicans are blaming Obama for not accomplishing things that they worked incredibly hard to block. Not that I agree with all of the things Obama wanted to do, it just seems unfair and wrong to lay all the blame on him. I just wish one party would control everything for a while so we can see what would happen."

(2,479 posts)And the closing was a symptom.
Rarely do we talk of the disease, which is globalizing away 30 million jobs, creating massive unemployment.
Add to that, about one trillion a year was lost, that is now creating bankruptcies across the nation, in cities, states, and the federal government.
It's something our media, the media that convinced us it'd all be all right, that we'd be better off, and would get three jobs back for everyone we lost, doesn't much like to talk about. Why would they? They deeply planted that seed of deception .

(21,475 posts)We had that when Obama first came into Office. It is because the Democrats did not do what you suggest that Republicans came back in 2010 and swept them out of Power...If Democrats would have only exerted the Power they held, America would be on much more solid footing now...

(1,309 posts)When Obama came into office he had enough democrats and independents in name only to bring measures to the floor. He did not have like minded democrats and he had total opposition by republicans even if the idea proposed had originally been their own. It was evident to anyone watching the health care debates that financially conservative democrats are just another name for a republican- witness Conrad, Lincoln, and Blanche Lincoln.
If democrats had all been democrats and supported Keynesian economics embracing investment in infrastructure and jobs, the economy would have receieived a much larger stimulus and things would have been beter but a desire to have bipartisan solution and appeal to a larger number of legislators led to a skimpy and too small proposal. Same goes for healthcare. Whether the President could have done etter, I do not know. I believe he thinks that wasthe best deal he could have gotten in the short term.

The Republicans were blocking everything with filiuster, so the Dems needed a 60-vote majority, whcih they did not have. SOme of the Dems were Blue Dogs, who are far too conservative (DINOs), and Ted Kennedy's brain tumor kept him from voting part of the time. So the Dems never had the working 60-vote majority that they needed to overcome the Republcians constant filibustering.

(3,795 posts)over and over again so that EVERYONE in America knows and understands that very important point. I rarely see Democrats effectively placing the blame on the Republicans for the lack of so many good policies and bills being implemented when Democrats had "full control" of Washington from '08-'10 (key word "effectively" . Democrats ALLOW for the muddying of the waters and allow for so much of the blame to be shared with the Democratic Party when they don't successfully and effectively expose Republican obstructionism for what it is.
Where are the Democrats saying they are sorry they couldn't get so much good legislation that was passed in the House through the Senate, but SEND MORE DEMOCRATS to overcome Republican obstructionism. Yeah, it sucks we didn't pass a lot of bills we wanted passed, but the answer is NOT to send more Republicans. Send MORE Democrats and we'll get it done next Congress. Lay out the top few bills that were shot down that would help Americans most, and let Americans know those bills WILL BE PASSED if you send more Democrats. Freaking rocket science I tell you. Oh yeah, and if elected Democrats help stymie the passage of Democratic legislation, truly big important Democratic legislation, they should be treated appropriately. If you're fighting against big ideas that are representative of the Democratic Party platform then you shouldn't be in the Democratic Party.
Obama should let America know that he understands that things haven't improved as much as he would have liked, but the reason that is the case is that Republicans blocked so much good legislation that many of his good ideas have yet to be implemented. All he would have to do is tell the truth, and we could build a movement to kick the Republicans asses. Republicans have even successfully blocked legislation to reverse subsidizing the offshoring of American jobs to foreign countries, and yet, very few Americans know or understand this fact.
It should be SO EASY to make the Republican Party a minority Party. Yet, our leaders never quite seem to figure it out....
We're going to have to make "our" elected Democratic officials implement truly Democratic legislation. With that said, we can't even do that if Republicans are in power.

who had gotten that position by beating the real Democrat in the primary; and he spent much of those few months proving that he was Independent by assisting the GOP.
And then Kennedy died and was replaced by Brown and we weren't even close. Without a 60 vote majority we never controlled the Senate -- not with a GOP that, for the first time in history, filibustered virtually everything that the Dems even tried to propose.

(12,287 posts)There was Kennedy and Byrd dealing with illness and not always there. Then there were the blue dogs and Lieberman...it was still like herding cats. Maybe if he had a really supper majority we'd get more done.
Mid-terms always have a lack of interest to a lot of voters. Lot of apathy during Mid-terms and many people don't think local elections are that important.

(36,974 posts)then Kennedy's seat was vacant for one month before a temporary replacement was sworn in.
Then the Senate was on recess for most of the rest of the year, then Sen Brown (R) took over Kennedy's seat in January 2010.
Altogether we had a 60 vote super-majority for only around TWO MONTHS since the time Obama took office.

July 7. 2009 - August 25, 2009
when Al Franken was officially seated
September 25, 2009 - February 4, 2010
when Paul Kirk was appointed to replace Kennedy
when Scott Brown took office after defeating Martha Coakley
one day in September 2009, Republicans lacked 40 votes
there was a filibuster proof majority in the Senate it lasted during two brief periods which lasted for a total of just over five months when counted altogether (and Congress was in its traditional summer recess for most of the July-August 2009 time frame).

Refusing to sign the international bio-weapons treaty prompting Russia and China to claim they will begin development programs to counter what is now perceived as a US threat. Pre-emptive war. Rekindling nuclear arms production. Dangerously restructuring the oversight of our nuclear arsenal and simultaneously shutting down the only Federal watchdog agency monitoring domestic nuclear materials. Exposing an active undercover CIA agent, effectively shutting down a critical global monitoring system for weapons of mass destruction and dual-use materials while costing around 80 lives of field agents and informants.

(12,287 posts)I heard basically the same thing from a discussion of 5 people. All that started the whole thing was the TV played that quote of Ryan's when he said that 20 year olds were staring at old Obama posters wondering when they could start their lives, yada, yada. I just shook my head and said out loud "Well, if you would have voted for the jobs bill the 20 year olds wouldn't have to wonder." And all of a sudden an elderly woman said it's so sickening that they blame Obama for everything and that people really couldn't expect him to clean up a mess that took over a decade to make in four years.

(813 posts)I think that as more and more people - real people with real concerns - really find out just how cutthroat the social Darwinism of today's GOP is, they're going to defect.
Of course, there is going to be that rock-ribbed section of the Party on a constant drip of Fox, Limbaugh, Beck and their ilk that would vote Republican even though they're shooting themselves in the foot.
I am disappointed that Obama did not push for single-payer, but what he has done is more than has been accomplished with health care since the creation of Medicare/Medicaid...trying to keep an optimistic spin on it, half a loaf from Barack Obama is better than breadcrumbs from the GOP any day of the week!

He won the state in 2008 by a mere 107,000 votes or so.. that's hardly a large margin.
Ohio people are just dumb enough to support Rmoney in large numbers.

(1,412 posts)snip;
Vice presidential candidate Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) is taking flack on the morning news shows for his keynote address at the Republican National Convention Wednesday night. His speech was riddled with false claims, so much so that even Fox News wrote, To anyone paying the slightest bit of attention to facts, Ryans speech was an apparent attempt to set the world record for the greatest number of blatant lies and misrepresentations slipped into a single political speech.
1. A downgraded America. Ryan blamed the president for the nations credit downgrade in August 2011 after Republicans threatened to allow the government to default on its debt for the first time in history. But the ratings agency explicitly blamed Republicans saying that they refuse to accept any tax increases as part of a larger deal.
