Senate Judiciary Chairman Lindsey Graham warns there will be collateral damage if Democrats move forward on impeachment: Those of us in the Republican Party in the Senate need to shut out the House, meaning move on with GOP agenda
8:39 AM - 31 Jul 2019Link to tweet
Besides the fact that Senator Graham was warning House Democrats not to impeach his new political daddy, there was a serious threat in his statement. Graham was saying that if House Democrats impeach Trump, the Senate is going to freeze the House out. There will be no more legislation from the House that will get passed in the Senate. Mitch McConnells Senate majority will ignore everything that comes out of the House, including articles of impeachment.
The only constitutional requirement is that a trial is held on articles of impeachment. Theoretically, McConnell could hold a trial in an hour, have Senate Republicans vote not to convict, and impeachment ends with a whimper.
House Democrats need to ask themselves how much different life would really be if Senate Republicans ignored them. McConnell is refusing to bring House-passed bills the Senate floor for a vote, so what would House Democrats really be losing?
Republicans are very worried about impeachment, and Lindsey Grahams words should be read not as a warning but as an expression of fear.

Someone's a tad worried.
PS. Don't you just want to reach into that picture and pluck that nose hair out, or do you just want to let him sport it for others to laugh?

(60,010 posts)It's been revealed that both young boys as well as girls were used in Epstein's sex ring, and that went back a long long ways, into the 80's.
All we know for sure is Graham was not a trump fan until he played one round of golf with Trump, then emerged as a devotee. I can't think of anything except a threat would work that quickly.
GoCubsGo
(32,078 posts)It would certainly explain a lot. Epstein had dirt on lots and lots of people. He was probably using his buddy, Trump, to maintain his cover. If Graham was one of his blackmail victims, I have little doubt he would have let Don the Con in on it.

(4,461 posts)... obstruction if there isnt any crime? Ask him why would trump obstruct if there wasnt a crime being covered up?
In Grassleys view, I guess, if you obstruct well enough, youre golden.

(33,643 posts)And some measure of cajones ... also generally lacking.
"Did you know that obstruction law specifically says there's no need for a underlying crime to be charged for an obstruction charge to be brought ... and that's because SUCCESSFUL obstruction would in fact prevent discovery of the crime"
HOW HARD IS THAT as a follow-up question, fearless journalists?

(82,849 posts)Which is to say, an agenda that includes actual governance, rather than just sitting on their ample sit-upons and collecting their paychecks each month. Because that's about all the Senate has been doing since Democrats took the House. When the Democrats take back the Senate next year, the Republicans can go back to carping about being forced to do stuff.

The_Counsel
(1,660 posts)Asked about episodes of obstruction in Mueller report, Grassley dismissed it: How can you have obstruction if there's not a crime?
First of all, obstruction is ITSELF a crime. It is illegal to impede any investigation by law enforcement. If you really want to get to the truth, the smart thing to do is to let an investigation run its course. After all, to the compromised GOP's point: it's impossible to "find" a crime that isn't there.
Secondly, wouldn't the very ACT of obstruction be an admission that you are guilty of some crime you don't want found out? It's exactly why Nixon was going to get it in the ass if he hadn't have resigned and was eventually pardoned. And by the way, the PARDON is basically and assumption of guilt as well....

"I do believe the Russians hacked into the (Democratic National Committee). I do believe they hacked into (John) Podesta's email account. They hacked into my campaign account," he told CNN's Wolf Blitzer on "The Situation Room." "I do believe that all the information released publicly hurt Clinton and didn't hurt Trump. I don't think the outcome of the election is in doubt. What we should do is not turn on each other but work as one people to push back on Russia."
Authoritarianism Expert Suggests That Lindsey Graham is Compromised by Russia After Being Hacked
Kendzior noted that Grahams emails were also hacked and although the contents of those emails have not been released, Grahams defense of Trump could indicate the Senator fears whats in those emails.
There are a few things we should remember, she said. The RNC was hacked; no one knows what happened to those emails. Lindsey Graham personally was hacked and nobody knows who has those emails. The RNC is complicit financially and politically and broadly in what the Trump campaign has done in terms of illicit interactions with Russia.
Kendzior then suggested that Graham could be, albeit involuntarily, mixed up in the RNCs financial entanglements with Russia, which would explain the change in his behavior.
We have tracked all of those financial ties and theres pretty good chance that either voluntarily or involuntarily Senator Graham has gotten mixed up in the situation and cannot be an objective observer, she explained.
Kendzior added that Graham has strayed from his reputation as an anti-corruption firebrand in the Senate.

Mueller indicated that trump did, indeed, lie under oath. Undercut the underlying evidence in the Mueller Report.
