General Discussion

The first, the racists, voted for him because he is an open and unapologetic racist. And these people, the racists, see Trump's open and proud racism as a validation of their own racism. Perhaps these racist Trump voters would like to be openly racist, but fear of the consequences might be stopping them.
Often, these racists call criticism of their own racism "political correctness" because that makes them, in their eyes, the victims.
The other class of Trump voters, the tinier fraction, are 1% types who know that Trump will serve their own narrow financial interests.
The only real question is, what percent of Trump voters are racists?

(42,641 posts)They know that Trump is a racist, and he validates their own views.
The second type are the greedy.

Look Im as white as you can get. My friends (white) joke about how white I am. BUT I can dance.
Hey that was racist! Yes it was. You know why? Because we were almost all raised as racists. Back then we told jokes and echoed stereotypes because who was going to tell us No? There was no representation of black America to tell us how it was racist.
Now, now I know to not act on these instincts I had no control being instilled in me but they are in there.
So pretty much all the Trumpsters are racist. They may not act on it but they dont have to because he does it for them.

(42,641 posts)In the very small town where I grew up, there were no black people, and very few non-French people.
But Trump does validate the racism of Trump voters, as did Reagan before him.

(1,480 posts)As far as I know, there was only one black family in our town. Watts, about 15 miles away, was the primary black community. But my parents treated that one family like they did anyone else.
My neighborhood was filled with Mexicans (we called them "Chicanos" then). We kids didn't care what color someone was or where they came from. We just cared if they were fun to play with.

(4,448 posts)These are people that are loyal to the party above all else. They vote for whoever their nominee is no matter what.
Blind party loyalist.

(42,641 posts)If so, they are enablers.
If not, they are too uninformed to vote safely.

(4,448 posts)and some aren't. In a pool of 62 million voters, we can probably find lots of subtypes.
And yes they are enablers.
But blind party loyalty is a real thing. I've met numerous ones that firmly believe that ANY Republican is better than any Democrat. I've heard it described as "hold my nose and vote". This occurred in the elections of George W Bush as well. They beleive that while they don't like the candidate, they still believe that their interest are better served by someone of their party.
Sometimes they accurately called "low information voters".

(42,641 posts)But still, are they racists, or are they willing to vote for racists? To me, there is very little moral space between the two groups.
