Rachel Maddow's ratings slump

https://www.forbes.com/sites/markjoyella/2019/07/30/msnbcs-rachel-maddow-slips-to-5th-place-in-july-ratings/

MSNBC's Rachel Maddow Slips To 5th Place In July Ratings
Mark JoyellaSenior Contributor

It's been more than a year since MSNBC's star host Rachel Maddow beat Fox News Channel's top-rated host Sean Hannity to take the title most-watched host in all of cable news. At the time, March 2018, The Rachel Maddow Show finished in first place with an average total audience of 3.058 million viewers—the show's best-ever performance in the 9 p.m. ET hour. MSNBC's ratings had been climbing, up 30% in the first quarter of 2018, while ratings for FNC and CNN were down.

But ratings data released Tuesday by Nielsen show MSNBC's surge has slowed, with Maddow slipping into fifth place overall with a total audience of 2.487 million viewers, behind Hannity (3.332 million), Tucker Carlson Tonight (3.145 million), The Ingraham Angle (2.591 million) and The Five (2.503 million). The five top cable news shows finished in the same order among viewers 25-54, the demographic group most valued by advertisers, with Hannity drawing a total audience of 527,000 viewers, and Maddow well behind with 384,000.

You might be onto something.

Friends who are fiercely loyal to Rach have stopped watching her the past few weeks. They're still loyal to her and love her. But as you said, even Dems are going through tRumputin fatigue syndrome, even though we really can't afford to with his racist, fascist, putin-loving, treasonous fat ass installed into the White House.

I've lost any tolerance I ever had for "traditional" television, especially news and opinion.

My life is better without it.

Our television plays DVDs and Netflix, that's all it does. No cable, no satellite, no broadcast.

I read all my news and opinion.

Also they've been moving everyone around all the time anymore.

I watch a show because I like the way they present the gnus. I like Katie Tur, Ari Melber, Chris Hayes, Rachel Maddow, Lawrence O'Donnell and Brian Williams.

When they have stand-ins that are below par of course they won't get the ratings. Some of the morning ones leave a lot to be desired. Many are too right leaning, and Chuck Todd tops that bunch.

But all of the times I have tuned in it was pretty much unwatchable. Repetition repetition repetition. Let me tell you how great I am and how breaking and monumental what I'm about to tell you is, repetition. Ohh, you heard that a week ago? Well tune in tomorrow for some more repetition that I will call "breaking." By the way, I can connect so many dots it will make your head spin. Breaking!

Limbaugh and Hannity get it more than others. It's entertainment first. It's about pushing the envelope and not apologizing. All of our people need to get that. It makes a huge difference. Entertain the people and the audience will grow consistently.

She is brilliant and has a personality that resonates with people/me. The manner in which the content is delivered stinks. I hold the same opinion of just about every news show. Then again, I was in love with Gwen Ifill and think Jim Lehrer is the shit. I know they don't spice it up for a lot of people. But if you aren't going the entertainment route, those are the two I would model.

Even the highest rated show is pulling in less than one percent of Americans. So much energy is expended around here for absolutely nothing.

Cable news is a fart in the wind. It’s a handful of cranky old people sitting in front of their magic box letting themselves be worked up to an eventual myocardial infarction. Seriously, Hannity has the highest cable news ratings and he’s getting half a million people in the key demo. Seriously, that’s Sacramento. It’s Tucson. Fuckin, like Albuquerque or some shit — nothingness on a national scale.

Cable news only matters because we pretend it matters. Get a good newspaper subscription and stop pretending entertainment for old white people is actual news.

It makes me physically sick to my stomach to hear all of the criminal things that Trump does over and over with no consequences. None!

I just can't listen anymore since his criminal success seems more and more inevitable, and summers where I am are short. It's too much--at least right now.

Edit: FTR, I record her show daily along with Chris Hayes and watch when I'm not too pissed off. Otherwise, in the past I never missed TRMS, and I'm sure that will be true again. I even have her T-shirt I parade around town in.
