He keeps telling them that China is paying for the tariffs.

(40,188 posts)That is what is the most frightening. The people who go to these rallies don't know how to think. They will believe whatever he says, and that is the real danger.

(16,258 posts)It depends on the elasticity of demand.
You know liberals used to support tariffs, but free traders took over.
That's all im going to say.
I prefer fair trade, especially in manufactured goods. Those millions of manufacturing jobs shipped abroad by greedy corporations is the real reason middle class is under stress.
Go Senator Warren!

(1,431 posts)Liberals have always supported reducing tariffs.
Woodrow Wilson -> reduced tariffs
Hoover -> raised tariffs
FDR -> reduced tariffs
JFK -> reduced tariffs
70s/80s free traders come to power in the R party and shut down the protectionists, resulting in a bipartisan consensus on tariffs
Decades of nativist propaganda convinced some liberals that tariffs are a liberal position and it's all you ever read about on the internet these days.
I have no idea why you think liberals supported tariffs. It's an ahistorical fantasy.

(16,258 posts)Still, there is broad agreement among the Democratic candidateswith the possible exception of Joe Bidenthat a return to the free trade approach previously adopted by the leaders of both parties is not possible. But there is not a clear message from the party about how the U.S. should deal with China, or with free trade more broadly.

Trump official: Tariffs won't hurt the economy
Who likes tariffs? Generally speaking, it's not the same people who like Trump

The people who like the sort of tariffs that President Donald Trump just proposed on steel and aluminum generally aren't the same folks who like him.
Who likes the kinds of tariffs that President Donald Trump has proposed on steel and aluminum? Usually it's groups that are pretty critical of the Trump administration.
For example, the United Steelworkers union and the AFL-CIO were among the strongest supporters of the proposal. Both unions opposed Trump during the election, and both have fought most of his administration's efforts, such as tax reform

Howard Dean on trade
What about free trade?
A: We've gone the first mile. I don"t disagree with the premise of the free traders. But we need an emerging middle class in these countries, and we're not getting one. So now is the time to have labor and environmental standards attached to trade agreements.
Q: What if they say no?
A: Then I'd say, Fine, that's the end of free trade.
Q: What do you mean, that'd the end of free trade? Then we slap tariffs on these countries?
A: Yes.
Q: So you'd be in favor of tariffs at that point.
A: If necessary. Look, Jimmy Carter did this in foreign policy. If you can't get people to observe human rights, and say that we're going to accept products from countries that have kids working no overtime, no time and a half, no reasonable safety precautions-- I don't think we ought to be buying those kinds of products in this country. We're enabling that to happen.

If you care about the lives of people around the world, you should support tariffs.

Im convinced it is cathartic for them. They get to say all the things at a trump rally that would get them fired at work. Sure as shit, one of my white employee tells one of my immigrant employee to go back home, he gets his walking papers.

(11,949 posts)You enact tariffs, even without the racist bluster, the other nations respond in kind.
Notice how no one calling for tariffs, right or left, ever gets into those details.
You work through the WTO as Obama and the Europeans were doing against China. Thats all out the window.
Anyone blaming our problems on other nations is in my mind a Nationalist. I dont like them right or left.

Every time I hear one of them repeating right wing talking points I always try to start the conversation with "How do you know?" and then see how far I can get trying to get some truth into that poor misguided individual.
