The Non-Trump Wing of the GOP Wants Out
August 2, 2019 at 8:53 am EDT By Taegan Goddard

First Read: “Think about the other GOP retirements we’ve seen – Reps. Susan Brooks, Martha Roby, and now Hurd.”

“And these Republicans parachuting out of the Republican Party underscore how vulnerable Trump really is, despite the growing economy. The fewer Will Hurd-like members running in 2020 reduces the number of moderate/non-Trump Republicans who would eagerly go to the polls for those representatives – and then still hold their nose and vote for the president.”

“The Republican Party is getting smaller and smaller, and that isn’t good news for an incumbent Republican president.”

Playbook: “If you are a House Republican, this has been an absolutely gutting few weeks. And, truly, if someone is trying to spin you on how the political picture is not that bad for the House GOP right now — at this moment — you ought to discount them as a political professional or analyst. Because it’s really, really bad, deflating and discouraging.”

The makeup of the Republican congressional members is exactly what the base wanted, and is a reflection of their idiocy.

The economy is "growing" or "booming," but we just can't quite point to the areas (outside wealthy people gathering ever more to themselves) where that's happening, and where people are better off. Roads continue to deteriorate, schools fall a little further behind year by year, and the lines at government agencies get a little longer. There's no catastrophic and sudden crash, like 1929 (yet), but more and more citizens slip into that area of economic discomfort, and those that are already there slip into poverty. People work harder, longer, and more efficiently, but the gains in productivity inure only to the benefit of the wealthy, as wages stagnate for the 40th consecutive year.

it's no fun being the minority caucus and are getting out for that reason. House Republicans no longer have the power to pursue their traitorous agendas and have become less valuable to their donors.

For others, there is a strong correlation between retirement, slim reelection margins in 2016, and the real chance that they may lose their seats in 2018.

That includes the Republican house caucus's one AA member, Will Hurd. Trump might have been the last straw any time the last 3 years, but no. He barely won with razor-thin margins the last 2 times, though, and Trump's and his party's latest racist behaviors almost certainly come in a distant second to the reality that Democrats have already determined to make this his last term.

Some Republican committee leadership positions are term-limited, leading their heads to strongly consider leaving over becoming just one of many at committee meetings.

No doubt other things are going on, but those are the ones I remember. Once they're committed to leaving, they'll all no doubt disavow some action of Trump's or even the party's that they'd had trouble justifying, but their donor classes have been packing legislatures with their corrupt agents for decades now, and these are those.

We’re seeing that play out. They get more insane with each moderate who leaves.

But we still have to vote them out in 2020, in every race, up and down the ballot.
