Pelosi Statement on the Progress of House Investigations
[link:https://www.speaker.gov/newsroom/8219-2/|
AUGUST 2, 2019 Washington, D.C. – Speaker Nancy Pelosi released this statement on the progress of the House’s investigations: “When we take the oath of office, we solemnly vow ‘to support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic.’ The Mueller report states unequivocally that Russia interfered in the 2016 election ‘in sweeping and systematic fashion.’ And the Intelligence Community informs us that Russia is working 24/7 to undermine our elections. This assault on our elections is a serious national security matter which the President chooses to ignore. “The Mueller report and his testimony last week confirmed that the President’s campaign welcomed Russian interference in the election, and laid out ten instances of the President’s obstruction of justice. The President’s more recent attempts to prevent us from finding the facts is further evidence of obstruction of justice. “To protect our democracy and our Constitution, Democrats in the Congress continue to legislate, investigate and litigate. Litigation: Last week, Jerry Nadler, Chair of Judiciary, took a significant step when he filed a petition to obtain the grand jury testimony underlying the Mueller report, for the House to ‘have access to all the relevant facts and consider whether to exercise its full Article I powers, including a constitutional power of the utmost gravity — approval of articles of impeachment.’ Elijah Cummings, Chair of Oversight and Reform, is winning in court in the Mazars case, seeking the President’s financial statements and reports prepared by his accountant to determine financial conflicts, violations of the Emoluments Clause, and the truthfulness of representations contained in the President’s statutorily required financial disclosure forms; Maxine Waters, Chair of Financial Services and Adam Schiff, Chair of Intelligence are winning in court in the Deutsche Bank case, seeking the President’s bank account records to assist with the Committees’ investigation of unsafe banking practices, including money laundering, illicit transactions and foreign investments; Richie Neal, Chair of Ways and Means, is pursuing the President’s tax returns to assist with the ongoing investigation of the IRS’s presidential tax audit program; Eliot Engel, Chair of Foreign Affairs, on another front, is investigating the Russia connection with hearings seeking the facts from the Trump-Putin meetings; In addition, last week, the House voted to reiterate its oversight authority, and ratified and affirmed the subpoenas already issued by the committees and any subpoenas to come. Responding to the subpoenas gives the President an opportunity to provide information that could exonerate him. If he has nothing to hide, he should cooperate with the subpoenas. Investigation: Our litigation has been strengthened by the months of work from our six committees which are engaged in the investigations. 54 percent of House Democrats serve on these committees engaged in hearings and investigations, and I am very proud of their work. Legislation: We have sent the Securing America’s Federal Elections Act to the Senate. However, Mitch McConnell refuses to take up this legislation or any other legislation to protect our democracy. Why do the President and the Republican Leader in the Senate choose to protect Russia rather than to protect the integrity of our elections? We will continue to lead a drumbeat across the country demanding the GOP Senate act. “The assault on our elections and our Constitution is a grave national security issue. We owe it to our Founders to sustain our system of checks and balances and our democracy. We owe it to our heroic men and women in uniform who risk their lives for freedom to defend our democracy at home. We owe it to our children to ensure that no present or future president can dishonor the oath of office without being held accountable. “In America, no one is above the law. The President will be held accountable.”

3. The NBC news tonight,
with Lester Holt, reported that more than half of the House Democrats now support impeachment. They reported that Pelosi was not on board with that.

11. They claim Pelosi is so powerful, "nothing's happening" because "she won t let them"
But when we talk about the torrent of things that are happening, they say it's all occurring without her approval and over her objection.

20. Lincoln
"In this and like communities, public sentiment is everything. With public sentiment, nothing can fail; without it nothing can succeed. Consequently he who moulds public sentiment, goes deeper than he who enacts statutes or pronounces decisions. He makes statutes and decisions possible or impossible to be executed."
-- Abraham Lincoln Speaker Nancy Pelosi is very fond of the above quote. Note how public sentiment has been "mould[ed]" since she took the gavel. She gets the pundits talking to the public on topics the House is involved in. There seems to be more noise from the public, now, about how no one is above the law. |

Last edited Sat Aug 3, 2019, 11:28 AM - Edit history (1) If Pelosi didn't want impeachment, we wouldn't be talking about impeachment, at least not as it's being talked about now. If she has the power to block impeachment and force her Caucus to vote for impeachment against their will, she'd also have the power to force them to stop talking about it and the numbers supporting impeachment wouldn't be growing.
As I've said, she'd have shut that ish down months ago. |

6. i appreciate statements like this, to let the people know we are doing their work.
at this point we've waited this long for the courts there seems to be little point in impeaching until they court cases are resolved. Why are these cases taking so long? We filed most of these motions MONTHS ago. These are matters of national security. Let's get a move on. Must be some docket we can be bumped to the top of.

10. Interesting read
Without diminishing the fact that Trump has engaged in criminal behavior worthy of impeachment, this statement emphasizes the need to remain focused on the GOP resistance to protecting our election integrity.

13. She is a Master at the top of her game
She uses every resource, surely layers of staff and expertise, party consultants, but she makes the decisions, she just has such a nose for the political winds, and how visuals will play, and the words, vocabulary, clarity of explanations ... magnificent!!
We are privileged to have such an experienced, skilled, and patriotic Speaker at this moment of our history. |

14. She said that on Jimmy Kimmel. She put her hand over her heart and she held up her other hand
And recited her oath of office. She knows exactly what her duty is her reluctance to move forward upsets me. I don't buy the argument that it isn't her decision. She leads and she has a whip. If an impeachment vote was held there is no way Democrats are going to vote no.
The fear is about losing seats and party influence. If this were any other issue I might seed the point that party matters and. maintaining the house matters. Right now though it doesn't because there's a bigger issue. The president is a criminal and the house has an obligation to impeach him for his gross negligence and criminal activity. I don't want to hear it if you're going to talk to me about party and seeds. We are a nation of laws and we function under the Constitution. If we do not accept that the constitution demands that we impeach President Trump then we must also accept that the constitution means nothing and is only useful when convenient. I know many others believe there is a long game and play and that the ultimate goal is impeachment. I truly hope that is the case because every day that Trump remains on impeached... it's a blight on America |

16. How refreshing. Thanks, Speaker Pelosi.
How refreshing to see statements from public servants done the traditional, proper way rather than rambling inflammatory gibberish on social media.
See her official statement on her .GOV web page here: Go to: https://www.speaker.gov/ Nancy's Twitter page is good to reference as well and we won't find lies and hate there either (sign-up not required to view): Go to: https://twitter.com/SpeakerPelosi KY....... ![]() |

19. she is doing everything right
there is zero chance senate will do anything so impeachment is meaningless. Impeachment months before 2020 election will result in resounding acquittal by senate of all house charges thus handing trump victory along with gop gains in house and state and local races. For once, we need to do politics instead of do what’s right. Winning 2020 is MUCH more important than symbolically impeaching trump.
