Woman Walks into NC Humane Society, Asks for 2 Dogs Who've Been There Longest with Special Needs

The Asheville Humane Society says it's a moment that every shelter employee dreams about.

Last week, a woman named Leslie walked through their front doors and said, "Which two dogs have been here the longest, with the most special needs? I'm here to take them both home with me."

Those two unwanted dogs were Sam, who had extensive medical issues and had been at the shelter for six months, and Brutus, who has severe separation anxiety and had been there for five months.

My fiance and first wife at the time picked out our future cat from photos. I went there a week before I was to move and I played with various cats including the one my ex chose. She was kind of shy and really skiddish. There was something about her. Her tail was shortened and the staff didnt know if it was trauma or a birth defect. The other cats really wanted nothing to do with her because the tail is used as part of their social interaction. Still she was so sweet and cute. I asked to adopt her and the staff really was kind of torn between not wanting to let her go and knowing that she had to be adopted because she was not going to be allowed to stay... if you know what I mean.

The day I picked her up and paid the bill the woman behind the counter said she had been there longer than any other cat. They loved her dearly and wouldn't let just anyone adopt her. I know they meant that they were over the moon that someone wanted her and even though she may have been put down eventually, everyone there loved her so much. She really was an amazing cat

She lived with me through divorce, addiction, depression, meeting and marrying my second wife. My cat loved me so much that sometimes I think she tried to trip my wife down the stairs lol. When my second wife and I were having a hard time conceiving, she spent a ton of time sitting with my wife and cuddling which was very very uncommon. That cat was so attuned to both of us and went out of her way to make us happy. She was born in 2000 and lived until 2016. She died and a few days later my wife and I learned we were pregnant with our daughter. I sometimes think she held on until then because she was sick for a very very long time. In the end she had cancer but she survived for 6 months. I miss her every day.... my Cybel

She really had a special connection with you. That is such a lovely story. I absolutely love the way she held on until she knew you had something to cheer you up. It would make me a little sad if it didn't make me so happy!

She deserves some attention - if she was ok with it. So much crap out there we need to hear about the good ones among us.
