My dad is an avid country music fan. I grew up listening to Marty Robbins, Jim Reeves and others on the island. My dad was a soldier in the Jamaican army. Sometimes he was gone when stationed in other parts of the island or other parts of the Caribbean. He went to Grenada when Reagan invaded Grenada. So just like kids today with parents in the army, I loved when my daddy was home. I looked forward to Sundays when my dad pulled out his country records. I took care of those records when he wasn't there. My mom popped me when I tried to play them, afraid I would let the needle scratch them. It was a serene time.

Its funny you posted this- its not the picture some people might have about someone growing up on the islands, is it? I get annoyed at times when people have all these stereotypes about Jamaica and what its like living there.

But its what brings us to the tragedy we have today, or at least part of the reason. Stereotypes. People not really knowing other people...

and been to rural bars would have memories of Jim Reeves and Marty Robbins from the jukeboxes in these bars. I first heard this on the radio in my pre-teens. I mean this song shocked the hell out of us, but we learned about a town called El Paso

My paternal grandmother adored Jim Reeves and his Old Christmas Card.

Let me add that I loved your comment about stereotypes.

We'd spend the 'summer' holidays with granny and she sure loved her Jim Reeves

Many Caribbean people know more about C&W music than North Eastern Americans

How else would this work - along with the herb

Now sixty years later, his own race would shoot him for dating her.
