Off-duty soldier recounts carrying kids to safety from El Paso rampage

(Reuters) - An off-duty soldier who was at the Texas mall near Saturday’s deadly mass shooting was hailed as a hero after recounting how he and another man tried to carry children to safety.

Oakley said that as he tried to make it to the parking lot he saw “a whole bunch” of children running around without their parents, some crying.

“So I pick up as many as possible and carry them with me and another guy does as well,” he said, before apologizing to the KTSM reporter: “I’m sorry, I’m shaking.”

“When I got out I guess one of the cops thought I was the shooter or something, so I had to show him my clip to show it was still full,” he said.

2. I am no fan of guns, but his guy is a fucking hero, NOT a part of the problem

He didn't use his gun, he used his head to save children from potentially being murdered, this is a shitty thing to say Hoyt.

Getting kids to safety is heroic, but carrying gunz ain’t.

And he is really young. Carries kids he doesn’t know to safety and he is part of the problem? We need more young men like him.

Maybe someday, when he get my age, he will realize carrying a gun around is bullshit.

I know you hate guns. But this young man did good.

5. Yet, his support of gunz helps preserve the "rights" of racists, the majority of gun toters.

Not discounting his heroics today, but the vast majority of gun toters aren’t doing it for good of society. Without their support, we’d have banned these rifles for good long ago, maybe long enough ago to prevent today’s shooting. Again, kudos for getting kids to safety, but not encouraging more guns in more places.

8. Ok. I can deal with that rationale.

But I’m thinking the young man would be surprised to hear he is supporting racists.

But I agree most of the folks I know who carry everyday have a mental image of shooting a black man in self defense. Can’t argue that.

A few days ago I said in a post I didn't trust an opinion you presented, today I trust your opinion, thank you, sorry for being a hot head. We might not always agree, but thank you for this post.

If I agreed with everyone here I would not have joined.

You just have to realize honorable people can disagree. And honest people are open to changing their minds. Goodness knows I have!
