(6,973 posts)I have a friend from nearby Bellbrook, a suburb outside of Dayton. I've spoken of her often here on this site. She's the one who cut her relatives loose post her LAST family picnic there in 2016, because they didn't like the fact that she's married to a black man, and because she voted for Hillary Clinton. She told me years ago that Bellbrook was an extremely racist place. Since 2016, she tells me that her life is more peaceful and calm because she no longer speaks with her family, and she tells me that her family is DEAD to her. Also that she'll never step foot back in Bellbrook ever again.

(4,381 posts)The Dayton area is a very racially, religiously, and economically polarized community. Government has been trying for many years to educate and bring softened viewpoints, but the current WH has absolutely not been helpful; hence the GOP candidate became governor, and his first order of business was to ease gun regulations. I'm a long-time Ohio resident of three of the larger cities in this state, but refuse to even consider living in the Cincinnati area/corridor to Dayton. Let's not forget that the WPAFB borders the community, and MUST obey or at least voice public approval of their fearful and racist Commander-in-Chief who is bent on dividing American communities through bizarre chaotic leadership of the GOP (or vice versa if owned by those with financial entanglements with Putin, notwithstanding his own embraces) and cozying up to monied interests with an agenda. The AF is also rife with intolerant evangelical RW Christians who support underlying GOP white privilege and decry the LGBTQ community. The inhibition of women's reproductive rights is also a widely held opinion among a large active portion of the "churched" community. Ohio's districts are now heavily gerrymandered to keep GOP in the leadership positions. RW evangelical religious sects have high membership that cross economic status who prefer to "shun the sinners." It's not unusual for young persons to have either misguided rebellious viewpoints or even stronger political stances than their parents. (I suppose this is the natural order of things as teens test their familial limits or go along to get along with relatives, anyhow). Ever heard of Whiggers? It's a derogatory term for persons who don't have a White Nationalist ideology in this community, those that treat racially different "others" with whom they live in community with respect. Never heard that term anywhere else before I moved around the state. Indeed, I was warned off-the-record by a realtor about choosing a home in a suburb to the north of Dayton. That recent tornado tore right down the street on which I lived. To the northwest in rural Ohio, the area around El Dorado is known for being historically linked to the KKK.

Thanks for more insight into the area where you live. All the ugliness that's ever been in this country, which is a lot, is bubbling to the surface now.

(4,381 posts)melting pot of races and cultures - I tease the unmarried in the family of bringing in those not yet represented, LOL, and also so reluctantly have agreed, at their request, not to contact those close relatives who have expressed their hesitation with mixing up the "human" DNA codes, and those expressing the desire that their stance as fundamentalist Christian overlords of correct opinion and behaviors go unchallenged! To me, that IS being "the better person" and has also given me much less familial drama over many years. Love 'em and miss 'em, but NO!

(7,143 posts)The entertainment district is mostly populated by young, white patrons. You can't presume his motive based on demographics.
The bar patio, OTOH, is the one of the busiest and most mixed, along with the adjacent Toxic Brew patio. Those are the only open patios facing the street.

(4,459 posts)... about the sister being a victim earlier today. The understanding was that she and her male companion - also killed - actually went there with him earlier in the evening. I dont know if that has been debunked or not.

(6,679 posts)He killed his sister and one of his friends. The shooting lasted 30 seconds.
It hasn't been said outright but all the reporting seems to be leaning toward the start being a family issue that got him so hopped up he just shot everyone.
The outside of Dayton news is trying to force a racial motive to get ratings I guess. Locals aren't really even considering that from what I've seen.
The witnesses speaking out feel it was random.. whatever moved. The pictures of the faces of victims bear out that he was hardly there looking for a certain skin color.
