(51,430 posts)Anger creates action. I am an activist and I will fight for my country if I can. I make calls, write letters, boycott, protest, etc. My health is finally failing and I am unable to do what I would like to do and what I have been doing to stop this disaster of an administration. If I die before he is gone at least I will know I did my best. RESIST!
*To reduce anxiety I have a wonderful little dog who is hanging in there for me (I have been told this by many people). Holding her immediately reduces my blood pressure, even if CNN is on with Breaking News.

(32,478 posts)I have written letters but its been a while. I have resgistered people to vote, driven folks to the polls, made calls and wrote postcards. I used to be an elected member of my county democratic central committee.
Since my husband had a stroke almost 3 years ago, its a lot harder to get out and volunteer. I also work full time.

(905 posts)I went camping for 10 days, something I haven't done in decades. Reconnecting with nature while sitting on a canyon rim was an immense stress reliever. And then, of course, the forced disconnection (via zero cell service in the mountains I went to) was a great way to regain perspective & purge the senseless noise of the Rethuglicans & their ridiculous Putin's Puppet.

I also work hard with our local Democratic Woman's Club, fundraising for the women who will be on our ballot in the November 2020 general election. We don't start giving money until after the primaries though. As soon as the weather begins to cool down I will be knocking on doors in my precinct to find the unidentified Democrats. Registering new voters.

I am seriously considering knitting. Just read a book. Two stitches. Knit and Pearl. But remember trying to knit a pair of socks. Did not do well.
But seriously it is a shame we have to find things to control our anger against the hate and rage we hear daily. The media needs to stop showing it. Or, we should turn it off. But it is really just background noise with a few good movies thrown in.

(24,587 posts)if you read one after another? How do you remember them? How long does it take you to read an average length book? Do you feel like you are abandoning your family / housemates, when you read? Do you find it too sedentary? Do you still work? At a sedentary job? How long do you read each day?
All questions I have. I would like to read more. I have a sedentary job, where I have to do a lot of reading and writing. My husband and I live alone together and are companions for each other.
NJCher
(35,423 posts)I read constantly, too, even at stoplights when I'm driving.
It doesn't dilute the book if I read one after another. I record each book I read in a journal. Then if I want to remember it, I can look it up on the internet and refresh my mind.
How long does it take? I can't really say but I read numerous books at one time. Some take weeks, others, days.
No, I don't feel like I'm abandoning family when I read. I often do it in their presence while they, too, are reading.
As far as sedentary, that could be a problem which I alleviate by only reading 20" at a time. I set a timer and when it goes off, I go do something active, like vacuum or pull weeds. Then I come back and read another 20" and so on.
Still work: yes. Love my work and will never quit. I'm my own boss so I control when and how much I work. Right now I have a work project that is very demanding of my skills and intellect, so at the end of every day I am excited about what I've accomplished. It could potentially be quite lucrative at some point, too, so that keeps me interested.
Is my job sedentary? Some are, some aren't. I have one job that is very physically demanding. My other jobs require a great deal of reading and writing. I use the same 20" rule with them.
Re your last sentence, same here. I enjoy that very much.

(17,972 posts)I can open a book, look at the first page, remember I read it. Speed read, but do not skip words as many do who speed read.
The time to read depends on how busy I am. I can crotchet, watch TV and read a book at the same time. My Husband once told me it was impossible. I told him I watch the program, read the book during commercials, crotchet all the time.
A habit I formed, along with friends from the time I could read when a bookmobile came to our door every two weeks. A close life long friend does the same. I have more time now, but even when busy with a family I still found time to read.
On the other hand I can not type worth a darn and I took a course

(6,714 posts)His students and publishers did an amazing job of recording his lectures and presentations. It's wonderful that it's public domain and out there. Obviously, he would have wanted to shorten the longer game for this purpose... He is very calming and soothing. If anyone is unfamiliar with him you might want to wikipedia him before starting in on his recordings. You can study with him. Or you can sleep, relax with him as nice ambient presence.

(50,168 posts)Yesterday morning was especially nice. (Yesterday afternoon I lost it again. LOL.) I'm also making a point of listening to oldies I love whenever I'm in the car and I always taken an hour or so in the afternoon to lay down and read a book. When I do watch things that piss me off, it's cathartic to yell at the television. Really. Fortunate for me my husband understands.

(35,423 posts)The law of probability says you're going to have some losers in any job now and then. Well, now we have him and the circumstances are just right for not getting rid of him until the next election. So I guess I'd have to say that I just look at him as one of the necessary evils in life. After all, if we didn't have bad, we wouldn't have good. If we didn't have short, we wouldn't have tall, if we didn't have sad, we wouldn't have happy, etc.
If the U.S. electorate thought all presidents were pretty good, then we wouldn't have any reason to vote. I'm an activist from way back and now I see more and more people engaged and active in the political process.
This doesn't mean I refrain from saying "You effing jerk" to him when he's on TV. But overall I'm calm about it.

(9,877 posts)I ever did is turn the TV off about 20 years ago. I watch no TV news whatsoever. If still employed one can always turn one's ire toward one's employer. They are usually good for a couple flashes of extreme anger a day.
Read books, engage in hobbies, volunteer, find things that use your mental energy in positive ways. Trump too shall pass!
