Rightwing media created a brainwashed base that they pumped full of lies and hate. Putin just echoed those rightwing media themes.

But the problem with our legitimate media isn’t Putin. It’s twofold: (1) our legitimate media is owned by corporations and often run by conservative executives. (2) the legitimate media is afraid of being called biased by the right, so they focus on bothsidesism rather than truth. Beto called this out nicely yesterday.
