(4,737 posts)One of the most hateful and unpleasant people who ever walked the earth. Wagner despised Jews, and blamed all the problems of the world on them. But you cant hold any of that against him when you hear his music. It transcends all the idiocy of the man himself. He only wrote operas, which he termed music dramas. But of them, his finest masterpieces are Tannhauser, Lohengrin, in which youll find the world famous Here Comes the Bride theme, Tristan und Isolde, which some consider his finest achievement, Die Meistersinger von Nurnberg, Parsifal, and his gargantuan four-opera cycle Der Ring des Nibelungen.

(24,324 posts)What did Wagner wrote for saxophone, and for which saxophone?
Brother Buzz
(36,389 posts)In lieu of 12 French Horns, Wagner uses saxophones and saxhorns in the orchestra pit at the Paris premiere of his opera Tannhäuser in 1861.
Wagner was buddies with Adolph Sax.

(9,686 posts)to see; Broadway, Soul, Comedy. I really miss those awesome days. The Obamas' had a great appreciation for the arts, especially musically and it was contagious. I miss them so.

(24,324 posts).........this is the Vienna Philharmonic, not the Vienna Symphony.
The Vienna Symphony is a fine orchestra and has had its ups and downs, but is not in the same league as the Vienna Philharmonic, which is probably one of the top five in the world.
I'm a 'drummer.'
This is what I know about. That, sushi, Sichuan cooking and not much else...
Oh BTW, this seemed to be the year of John Williams around here... did about 6 different things-- such as

I;m just like that.... I am retired, play in a few local community orchestras, and have about 75 pair of timpani sticks, 9-10 pairs of cymbals, 6 snare drums, 12-13 triangles, get the picture...

(4,737 posts)They did the original score, after all.

(4,737 posts)Not as good as the Vienna Philharmonic (not Symphony) cover, but then again, the LSO isn't quite that good.

(24,324 posts)I first heard them in jan 1984 in Leningrad at the Leningrad Philharmonie. (Of course as the then Leningrad Philharmonic.) It became then, and still is, one of my favorite cities...
I met a few of the percussionists after the concert, at which they had played the Shostakovich 5th. We crossed the street and I snuck them into my hotel room. There were 7 of us- 4 russians and 3 americans. we finished off 7 bottles of vodka, and i still have the photo to prove it. I reconnected with one of them about 3 years ago, on FB, where else? :>
Then, in Feb 2017 i went to hear the St Petersburg Philharmonic on their american tour. They again played the Shostakovich 5th. And again, after the concert I met the percussionists and we went out to a nearby pub. Of course, they were all younger, newer players. But, they all remembered my old friend, who we called from the bar.. We then drank a toast with glasses of Stoli-- to Shostakovich, St Petersburg and my dear old friend...
It was a touching night......

Hear d a really funny story about Vienna. An American brass player, friend of person who related the story, got to sub in Vienna for a concert (circumstances too long and convoluted to explain.) After a few rehearsals (and after work drinking sessions) he asked the Viennese guys, "We all know that Vienna has this unique inimitable sound, but it's not with every conductor. How do you do that?" Viennese guy answers, "Easy. If we like him, we do the Vienna sound. If we DON"T like him, we follow him impeccably."
Me, I'm a retired violist.

(63,221 posts)It was wonderful, and such an elegant evening. We got all dressed up and took taxis (Mercedes) to the concert. After that we went to Hotel Sacher for the famous Sacher Torte and Viennese kaffe. We were poor college students, but it was such a special evening for us.
You don't have to be wealthy in Vienna to go to the Philharmonic or the Opera. Of course, you don't get the best seats, but you can still experience some of the best music and opera in the world. The school I went to was right next door to the Opera House. It was such an amazing city, just drenched in art and culture.
It would all be wasted on Trump. He would be bored out of his mind and would never appreciate any of it.

(4,737 posts)That's likely the only way he ever hears music. As movie scores, or on the tee-vee.
