Huge explosion at Achinsk Ammo Depot in in Krasnoyarsk, Russia today
MSM initially reported but I haven’t found anything up to the minute, except on Twitter.
No one yet saying whether nukes or chemical weapons involved. [link:http:// Link to tweet ?s=21| Link to tweet ?s=21

2. For some reason I don't trust Putin.
I hope this doesn't involve radioactive material. If I lived there I wouldn't wait for an evacuation notice.

6. Those poor people!
It is always the ordinary people who suffer.

9. :) Suffering? We have far bigger evacuations here practically
every year now, 6.4 million for Irma. Big inconvenience, running out of gas, expenses or sleeping in emergency shelters if no friends or family to go to, having to come home and clean up (which happens here with every big wildfire). But since only a fraction were evacuated here, by far most probably went to friends or family in the city.
Perspective is good. Pretty sure they can handle it. In a city of 100,000 including those out at the depot, so far it's reported to be 1 dead, 12 to hospital, 6 released at the time of most recent article. |

11. The evacuations are not the concern.
I have lived through a lot of hurricanes - I am very familiar with this.
My concern for these folks is that they have no idea, or control over, what was in that depot. The contamination that they are exposed to by air and rain could have disastrous consequences for their health and future. I now live where there are no hurricanes, but there is still concern with contamination from what was the Rocky Mountain Arsenal. |

13. Sure. I just recommend holding off on sorrow and
recrimination reactions until we know enough to calibrate them. Less wear and tear on the psyche. This being Russia, though, I might do a little bracing and toughening up just in case.
You know, I never forget that I never research all that goes into producing a $5 lure for my husband or a silicone baking mat to make sure these indulgences aren't the end result of harmful chains of production in the various nations involved, including working conditions in mining silicone metal or contamination of environments. But I have a lot of company. Over 7 billion, and courtesy of the thrilling great advances in planetary wellbeing, most now also routinely culpable. Good luck with the Rocky Mountain Arsenal. |

12. One more thing -
I would hesitate to believe the Russian media.

10. Reports from The Guardian and BBC....
Mass evacuation after fire triggers explosions at Siberian base
Flying shrapnel from military base leaves one soldier dead and at least seven injured Andrew Roth in Moscow Mon 5 Aug 2019 Link: https://www.theguardian.com/world/2019/aug/05/mass-evacuation-after-fire-triggers-explosions-at-siberian-base (snips) An estimated 40,000 tank and artillery shells are kept on the base in Achinsk, a Siberian city that lies near the Trans-Siberian railroad, 2,000 miles east of Moscow. The Russian Defense Ministry said the storage site that exploded held gunpowder charges for artillery shells.
+++ It is not clear what caused the blasts, although lax safety precautions have caused similar accidents in the past. Siberia has also been hit by wildfires this summer, made worse by warming temperatures and a lack of rainfall. Explosions at ammunition dumps can send unexploded shells flying for miles around, requiring a significant clean-up effort to de-mine residential areas before locals can return to their homes. BBC.... Russia arms dump fire: huge blaze in Siberia extinguished 26 minutes ago Link: https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-49249504 (snips) Firefighters have put out a blaze at an ammunition dump in Siberia and munitions are no longer exploding there, the Russian military says.
Ten massive Il-76 cargo planes and five Mi-8 helicopters are water-bombing the area, near the town of Achinsk in the Krasnoyarsk region. A defence ministry statement said "there are no more fires" at the site, an old dump due for closure housing some 55,000 artillery shells. More than 9,500 people were evacuated. Six injured people are in hospital, but they are not critically ill. Flying munitions damaged a school and a kindergarten in the village of Kamenka. But Deputy Defence Minister Gen Dmitry Bulgakov said that besides smashed windows there was little structural damage in the area. Local residents were evacuated from inside a 20km (12 miles) radius around the arms dump. ![]() KY........... ![]() |
