I know this picture has gone viral, but here it is again. I just saw it on the news.
This is a throwback to Roots. Kunta Kinte. Crackers in cotton fields.
Turns out this is technique taught as policy by the Galveston PD (and others, I am certain).
What the fuck is wrong with these cops? You KNOW they knew the imagery.

(67,683 posts)There are good cops and bad cops. That broad brush paints a little too broad.

(67,782 posts)....over the years. There have been some bad ones, but I'd say only about 1%. The rest of them are good, dedicated people only wanting to serve their communities.
I wonder what that guy would say about the cops that took down the Dayton shooter within minutes?

(32,351 posts)And I'm quite sure there are also many white cops who would never do that either.

(14,487 posts)Imagine that you have a relative who is homeless and mentally ill... Imagine that YOU are aware that living on the streets is dangerous, unsanitary, makes you a target for crime/law enforcement and isolates you from your family but YOU CAN'T make that relative understand that despite your many efforts. Imagine searching the streets of a city for days looking for your loved one, to no avail. Have any of you ever went to breakfast, lunch and dinner at the local homeless shelters hoping you'd find your loved one having a meal with hopes to kidnap them and bring them home. Imagine locating your loved one, getting them in your car and they jump out of your moving vehicle to keep you from taking them from where they now call home. Just imagine for one second being one of his children who have been fatherless for years and your father isn't incarcerated or dead. With all of that in mind, now imagine scrolling fb and seeing said loved one being escorted to jail on foot by 2 officers on horses, hands cuffed behind his back with a rope attached. In 2019???? He was treated like an animal paraded through the streets by two incompetent assholes!
I have read some of the most hateful and insensitive comments in concern to the incident involving my BIL Donald Neely's recent arrest by GPD. People don't even understand the depth of mental illness and how it affects the person and their family. WE HAVE TRIED AND ARE CONTINUOUSLY TRYING TO BRING HIM HOME! Please continue to pray for my family! #justicefordonald #mentalillnessisreal #awareness

(58,785 posts)in the antebellum era is not proof of racism or racist intent. Pretty sure they've subjected a bunch of whites to that.
If you think about it, there would be serious practical and safety issues with getting off and walking with prisoners. Just maybe the time when mounted cops would fit community standards really is past. I see no way in this for public servants to show basic, required respect for anyone of any color.

(58,785 posts)pull up and take public nuisances and shoplifters to the pokey? Aside from parades, of course, horses would be most useful, and presumably most used, outside Texas anyway, where traffic often keeps police cars from being able to arrive when needed.

(7,511 posts)If you've spent any time in Texas you will recognize this image from driving by one of over a hundred Texas Department of Corrections facilities scattered around the state. The inmates are marched between mounted officers with shotguns and rifles to and from the fields and while at work in just this manner. I believe this to be a manifestation of that same behavior in Texas LEOs. Cowboy hats, shades, boots, the whole nine yards.
