"I let career perks silence my conscience"

U.S. Foreign service officer Chuck Park resigned from his position Thursday, leaving no holds barred in the resignation letter he published in the Washington Post.

Park said that rather than a “Deep State,” the federal bureaucracy which he had been a part of would be better called “the complacent state.”

“If the resistance does exist, it should be clear by this point that it has failed,” said Park of accusations that an underground governance is working to subvert President Donald Trump.

“We should be named and shamed,” said Park of himself and his colleagues who serve “the pleasure of the president,” including “this very partisan president.”

“I’m ashamed of how long it took me to make this decision. My excuse might be disappointing, if familiar to many of my colleagues: I let career perks silence my conscience,” said Park.

“I came into the government inspired by a president who convinced me there was still some truth to the gospel of American exceptionalism,” Park explained.

Park said that within the three years since Trump’s election, he had not seen any sort of resistance from within.

“To the contrary, two senior Foreign Service officers admonished me for risking my career when I signed an internal dissent cable against the ban on travelers from several majority-Muslim countries in January 2017,” said Park. “Among my colleagues at the State Department, I have met neither the unsung hero nor the cunning villain of Deep State lore.”

“Every day, we refuse visas based on administration priorities. We recite administration talking points on border security, immigration and trade. We plan travel itineraries, book meetings and literally hold doors open for the appointees who push Trump’s toxic agenda around the world,” lamented Park.

Park has served as a Foreign Service Officer for nine years. He has served American interests in Canada, Portugal, and Mexico.

Resigning Republicans keep doing this. If it's not "was just following orders" it's "trusted too much and was betrayed." BS. If this continues to follow the now well established pattern, he wanted to leave anyway or was being pushed out.

My initial thought is, "Good for him! If only more people followed their conscience and refuse to serve in a bureaucracy that is carrying out malicious policies."

Then a second thought comes: "Who will replace him, if the administration is responsible for the hiring or appointment? It's going to be someone even worse, isn't it."

I still say good for him. No one should commit acts that are diametrically opposed to their values and conscience. But the practical effects of the decision weight a little.

W. left a hell of a mess for President Obama to clean up, but I'm convince it wasn't half as bad as what our next President will have to deal with.

That the career bureaucracy and civil service just hang on. If we have our act together, they need have only weathered these four years. I've certainly stuck with a bad job for four years, knowing that the future has promise to be better.

I'm a hoping a lot of people in these sectors can, too.

The best and brightest may be reluctant to opt for that career path when a following election could put another fascist in the White House.

That's why 2020 is so very vital. We're not just electing a President. We're electing all of it down.

I mentioned something similar in a letter to my Senator this week when I wrote to him about gun regulations.

Park says colleagues should be named and shamed. Yet, in probably his only opportunity to do exactly that...crickets.
