Russia twitter accounts spreading videos white v minority confrontations to stoke racial tensions

I just saw a piece on early AM MSNBC with Richard Engle discussing this. Damn. Racism is real and many of these incidents are real, but how do we not allow Americans to be manipulated?

Russia-linked Twitter accounts have been spreading videos of confrontations between white people and minorities to stoke racial tensions in America, according to Clemson University researchers.

Russia-linked Twitter accounts promoted 'doxxing' over racial tension videos
Clemson University researchers found videos of confrontations between white people and minorities received instrumental early social media promotion from inauthentic accounts.

In October 2018, a cellphone video of a Brooklyn woman calling 911 to claim a 9-year-old black boy grabbed her rear went viral on social media, becoming one of a series of videos that activists and journalists seized upon as an example of the everyday racism faced by minorities in America.

That woman became known as “Cornerstore Caroline.” Other individuals who became the subjects of similar stories would be known by nicknames such as “Basketball Becky” or “Taco Truck Tammy.”

Now, Clemson University researchers have found those videos received instrumental early social media promotion from inauthentic accounts, some of which have since been removed by Twitter and linked by U.S. intelligence to Russia’s efforts to stoke racial tensions in America.

The tweets by the suspicious accounts drew 50-90 percent of the initial retweets before the stories took off, an indication their content played a leading role in drumming up attention, the researchers said.

Darren Linvill, an associate professor of communications, and Patrick Warren, an associate professor of economics, both at Clemson, identified more than 300 tweets from almost 30 suspicious Twitter accounts that appeared to look for and promote videos of racially tense incidents.

Failing that any time soon, we need to figure out how the hell to get these boys off social media quickly when they show up.

In early Spring 2018 I noticed that russian propaganda had switched from being supportive of Trump to being both FOR and AGAINST Trump at the same time. If you read closely, for example RT posts two types of article:

* articles where they ridicule someone for something, while carefully omitting any information that this person actually has a fair point; e.g. all those hysterical Democrats protesting the great peace-loving diplomat Trump

For example: RT once wrote an article how it's totally unfair that russian athletes were banned from the Olympic Games. Absolutely nowhere did the article say that they were banned because of doping.

For example: RT once wrote an article how the EU was moving against UK/Greece/forgot and how this is totally unfair bullying and uncalled for. The article did not mention that the EU had explained what they are doing and why they are doing this.

For example: When RT reports on Alexej Navalny and his anti-corruption protests, they never get to the topic whether he has a point.

For example: Amnesty International made a report about how the various factions in Syria engage in torture. RT wrote a HUGE article how the syrian rebels are torturing people. Nowhere did they mention that that very same report details far, far, far, far worse torture on part of the Assad-regime.

For example: There once was a study ranking countries by their corruption. (The method how they calculated their corruption-index was weird and focused on one specific form of financial corruption.) As the report showed that the US was the most corrupt country in the world, RT wrote a HUGE article about it. Nowhere did the article mention that that very same report had ranked Russia as more corrupt than Ukraine, which Russia loves to bash for being corrupt.

* articles how Trump sucks and how by extension all of the US sucks, while carefully ignoring their other reporting how Trump is great

For example: RT recently posted two articles:
"The Betsy-Ross-Nike controversy is necessary because a country must honestly discuss its own history."
"Saying anything against your own country is unpatriotic."

* sometimes, RT straight-up lies about what a report says

For example: The OPCW found that Sergej Skripal was killed by the chemical Novichok. The report wrote that he was killed "by the chemical the british government had alleged." But as the report didn't say Novichok, RT made up that the report had exonerated Russia.

Oh, and RT has this philosopher Slavoj Zizek who writes articles like:
* "Sexual consent is killing romance."
* "Talking about toxic masculinity means attacking our precious traditions."

Or are they too busy collecting the money?

One very good reason I'm not on Twitter. It's the most damaging platform for what passes for "conversation" these days. They gave the orange jerk a platform for his hate.

for people I really respect and whose real-time thoughts I appreciate--like Laurence Tribe and Neal Katyal for instance. Given how many constitutional legal issues are at play during the Trump era, I am really grateful to see their real-time analysis.

Do I wish there was a better system for this with appropriate oversite--damn right

He too sees it in racist terms which is why tRump was almost too good to be true. Trump's love affair with Kim is a marriage of convenience for both and not part of a long term strategy.
