In a War Zone you are supposed to be prepared to do battle with an enemy. In a Walmart customers aren't supposed to be ready to do battle with weapons against an unknown enemy. It isn't about Rambo, it is about a faster response in subduing a perpetrator to save more lives. Statistics for what? Statistics don't save lives; a faster response against an armed perpetrator by armed citizens might reduce the carnage.

John Crawford III Case: Feds Announce No Charges for Officer in Fatal 2014 Shooting
July 12, 2017, 9:40 AM EDT / Updated July 12, 2017, 9:40 AM EDT / Source: Associated Press

CINCINNATI — Federal authorities announced on Tuesday they have ended their investigation of the fatal police shooting of a black man in a Walmart store, concluding there wasn't enough evidence to charge the white officer who killed him.

The officer shot John Crawford III on Aug. 5, 2014, after police responded to an emergency call about someone waving a rifle in a store in Beavercreek, a Dayton suburb. Police said Crawford, who was 22, didn't obey commands to drop what they learned later was an air rifle he was carrying from a store shelf.

90. If there appears to be a threat
Fri Aug 9, 2019, 11:47 AM
Aug 2019

I would never discourage anyone from reporting it and truthfully telling what they have observed.

Yet I am seeing posters stating they would falsely report what the person was doing, as happened in Mr. Crawford's case. The police had been told he was pointing a gun at people and threatening them. Video showed that was false. Lying about what actions the person with the (apparent) gun coupled with blasé attitudes on if the police end up shooting someone is a recipe for more deaths of innocents, such as the case of Mr. Crawford.

tragically led to his death.

However, I do think an individual walking around, or in a store with an assault rifle slung over their shoulder is a threat. They are threatening to me and I do not know what their intent might be. So, as I said, I'd rather err on the side of caution, than witness a tragedy. I would not fabricate, I would merely state the facts. "An individual is walking around with an assault weapon". If law enforcement doesn't want to do something about that, then so be it. If anything happens, my conscience is clear.

I wanted to emphasize how differently police treat reports of armed subjects depending on skin tone.

An African American man was shot dead in a Detroit suburb recently. He had pulled his gun on a police dog sent to track down a “suspicious man” outside a banquet hall. He was there for his daughter’s baby shower. Apparently frightened by the attacking dog, he ran and is alleged to have shot and killed the animal. Then the police shot the man dead. Much, if not most, of the local public outcry was for the K9.

The departmental investigation cleared the police.

He's got the magazine in, so one has to assume it's fully leaded and ready to fire.

Can't tell at a distance whether he's got the safety on like he's supposed to.

He thinks the barrel is pointed at the ground, but it's actually pointed at the feet of the person standing to his left.

All he needs to do is lean over to look at the pastries, and the barrel is no longer pointed at the ground.

Even when it is pointed at the ground, it's not as if he's out in a field and an accidental discharge will bury itself in the dirt; floors and parking lots are hard surfaces that can cause ricochets.

He's disregarding the people around him and carrying it in an un-safe manner. Kind on inevitable, because there is no safe way to carry in that environment.

As a funny aside, when I take the one I have to a store, I leave it outside, parked off in a corner. If I get any reaction at all, it's little more than a friendly "Nice Car".

Or perhaps it was one of these;

OK....just so you know that you aren't the only one on this board with enough years under your belt to remember party line phone systems or any other specific inside knowledge privy only to the elder set, here's a little info;

I was born when there was only 49 states, and a mere 6 months earlier, there had been only 48. Eisenhower was president.

That makes me 60. I bought and sold my first Corvette when I was in my 40's. Certainly not the youngest man to ever buy one, but certainly not the oldest.

But frankly, I don't give a fucking sloppy tinkers cuss whether or not I meet or fucking exceed the stereotype, I LIKE THE FUCKING CAR!!! Nor do I give two fucking shits whether or not you or anyone else approves of my automotive purchasing decisions.

It's fun to drive, I can afford it, and the last two iterations - the last two I have owned - represent an evolution in the model line that are essentially world class sports cars.

What's funny is that the accusation that the types of guy who would buy such a car must have a tiny penis always seem to come from people with an axe to grind. For whatever reason, because I enjoy the car I have bought, I'm assumed to be minimally endowed.

It is a fascinating perspective.

Ask yourself how many on this board would tolerate an oft repeated meme about a specific car being the favorite of gay men, or black women or Asians, yet it is perfectly alright to say REPEATEDLY on DU, that men who drive a Corvette must have a tiny dick.

Fine. I'm hung like a doorbell button, and that's why I bought a Corvette.

Breakfast at a popular local coffee shop, very crowded, families and kids. Then these two guys wearing camo costumes and packing big, huge pistols get seated. They caused an instant sensation that prompted some people to ask for a different table, others finished quickly and left.

The men kept fiddling around with their guns, readjusting straps, pushing them one way then another. One wore his gun low slung on his hip and it kept pulling his pants down and banging against the side of his metal chair attracting attention. The other one had his gun strapped to the middle of his chest and he kept whacking it against the table as he tried to eat. The funniest part was he kept spilling bits of food on his gun and inside the holster. When he tried to take the gun out that made lots of çustomers angry, and they started yelling, kids were crying, the manager told the guys to get out.

We got up to pay and as I passed their table I smiled like the Cheshire Cat and pushed one of those cards toward him. We didn't hang around to see his reaction.

This actually happened at a fast food place in my neighborhood.

Open carry is against the law here.

It was generally regarded as some kind of "suicide by cop."

I've unfortunately witnessed police shooting at people on multiple occasions.

I always think hard before calling the police. Mostly I don't. I'd be upset if the police shot, say, a kid spray painting graffiti on my back wall, or a mentally ill homeless person yelling obscenities at passing cars.

In my rough youth I worked in places where we frequently had to tell people to leave. In some places an aluminum softball bat was kept behind the counter if a more forceful response was required.

I'd have no trouble telling this gun toting freak to get the hell out. I might also take his hat as a trophy.

Michigan is an open carry state. It's not common for rifles, except up north, but I see at least one open carrying a pistol at least once every week or so.

Calling the cops here will result in 1 of 2 things, absolutely nothing, or one may show up, watch for a few min, and leave.

Michigan has a rather active open carry group, and after a few incidents with them, most cities and departments around here leave them alone because the courts here have generally sided with the open carriers.

I spent a half a year 2 years ago near the Ozarks tending a family farm after my father in law passed before selling it. During those 6 months spent there I saw first hand how almost EVERYONE I spoke with carried a gun in their car or had multiple handguns or rifles or both out in the open in their houses or garages - both men and women. My wife's niece was 11 and she had a pink AR-15 of her own.

After the initial shock of seeing people open carry in public in rural areas, especially during hunting season, I am still a bit uncomfortable but understand the hunting weapon is probably safer with the hunter in the store than left in a vehicle somewhere while the hunter is elsewhere.

This guy is obviously trying to make some idiotic statement, so I would probably wait to ridicule him until either he or I left.

Most recently this occured at a Popeyes Chicken on the N side of Tulsa. For those of you who don't know, the N side is predominantly minorities. A normal person does not go on a shopping trip like this. And
his companion has a large shoulder bag. Is she packing too?

143. I would try to have a conversation with him

I would ask “who helped you setup this rifle?”
Explain how his weapon retention is going to get someone hurt most likely you. How his choice in optics is all wrong for the rest of his loadout. I mean really a 4-14 scope with sunshade on a 16” carbine. Tell him point blank due to his choices so far he should take a class or three before ever carrying in public again. In essence I would make him feel small for his pathetic behavior and choices. I’m different I understand but ridicule works with his type. This “conversation” would be held in my Drill Sergeant style voice I’m sure I would have a few sharp cut downs fall out of my mouth.

Something like this:

Jesus age Christ, what a rolling clusterfuck! Sir apparently this best part of you ran down your mommas leg. Look at your piss poor weapon retention, hell I could rip that off your back and fuck you up the ass with it but I bet you would get off on it. Who the fuck shared with you in their great wisdom to put a god damn long range scope on a close quarter rifle did your daddy teach you that along with his love for goats? Your dumb ass needs to get some schooling on every fucking decision you made to walk out in public looking this way. You should fucking be ashamed of yourself and the shame you have just brought to every gun owner in the entire Fucking United States. Now go stow your gear until you have a small grasp on how to fucking use it you fucking moron.

Before you say I won’t trust me I have made bigger men than him quake when I get rolling. I’m not family friendly at those moments.

He may be just a jerk. He may be a insane. The only fact we have is that he can certainly kill many people quickly.

I’d yell for the guy to instantly “get the fuck on the ground” and to spread his arms and legs. If he didn’t, I’d shoot him without hesitation.

I’ve been in combat situations and I don’t play around with threats like that.

Fortunately for everyone, I lost my ability to keep firearms after a serious suicide attempt and my history of severe PTSD.

I would not leave, nor would I necessarily feel safer, and I certainly would not be indifferent. I would be thinking WTF? Why would you open carry an AR in public? That is just stupid. I would keep an eye on the guy's movements, get my coffee and depending on my original plan either take it to go, or drink it in the shop. I don't know the guy's mind so I don't know if he is a threat or not. Were he holding the rifle in his hands that would be a different story and I would book the hell out and call 911. As it is now, it is slung in a way that you could tell if he were going to shoulder it.

Interestingly, when you go to Mexico, you see the Federales or Military all the time with the ARs or FALs and you think nothing of it. I remember after 911 you saw National Guard and Military with their ARs and it was surreal. It is all about what you are used to, which is probably this butt munch's intention, to normalize open carry of rifles. I have seen pictures from Switzerland with people with rifles slung across their backs (granted they do not have magazines inserted) and people are just going about their business.

As others have said, you don't know this guy or his mental state, or if someone else will mess with him and trigger him into action, with ill intent or not. Once adrenaline kicks in, anything goes.

These weapons create unwarranted FEAR in most members of the public and if only from a moral standpoint, that is unfair to other customers in that store. Who the hell wants to go get a cup of coffee and come out with nerves on edge?

I would also call the store's headquarters and tell them of my experience and displeasure with the visit.

Depends on state and local laws for me. Lived in Texas for a while, for example, where state law allows businesses to post a statutory notice prohibiting firearms from the premises. If that notice was posted, and this guy walked in, leave and call the police. If on the other hand the notice is not posted, I don't patronize the establishment to begin with.
