Weeks before an agitated bison charged a 9-year-old in Yellowstone National Park, a jackass visitor was filmed petting one of the massive beasts, disturbing video shows.
The man seen in footage reaching over a fence to pet the animal on the head was lambasted by park officials Wednesday for his incredible lack of judgment and common sense.

The Cheyenne, Wyo., park said Wednesday theyre investigating the YouTube video posted July 8 to determine who the man was.
Not only did he put himself and others at risk, he violated regulations designed to keep these animals wild, park superintendent Cam Sholly said in a statement. We expect better from our visitors.

Yellowstone needs quotas. It's absurdly crowded now. IQ tests are a good place to start.

(4,305 posts)It's posted all over the place what not to do or where NOT to go. People are stupid. This man is not only lucky for himself but also that none of the other stupid people behind him got hurt because of his actions.
A HERETIC I AM
(24,365 posts)Yellowstone is a HUGE park, and unless you want to run fences across what is and always had been open range, you aren't going to keep these animals from going wherever the hell they want to go. Not to mention, apparently Bison really don't give a shit about fences, so if you want to keep them on one side of a fence, it had bloody well be pretty stout.
Just arrest a few of these folks, slap them with 4 figure fines and publicize that, and it might (and I emphasize "might" ) mitigate these interactions.
But it should be noted that this sort of behavior on the part of both guests and animals is by no means new. I traveled through Yellowstone back in the 70's with my family and on the way out of the park there was a report of a guy getting gored as he stood next to a Bison getting his picture taken.
The animals TOLERATE humans being in their living room. The Humans need to act more like the guests they are, instead of the boorish dumbasses so many seem to be.

(10,133 posts)the bison wander around where they please - just as if they owned the place, which they do. I didn't actually see any bison in the thermal areas when I was there, but I did seem quite a few hoofprints.

(46,166 posts)It's called Buffalo Herd Overlook and it's fenced with tall, sturdy chain link. So the fencing in the video looks like false comfort.
Years ago, husband and I came upon a large, male bison up in The Badlands. We came to a stop to figure out how we'd drive around the big loner who was standing on the edge of the roadway. Someone pulled up behind us, got out of his car and was on his way past our truck with his camera as if he was approaching Bambi. My husband quick opened his window and stopped the guy. I remember leaning across my husband and begging the guy to go back to his car because I didn't want to see him get killed on my vacation. I know that sounds stupid. But it's what I blurted out and he went back to his car. Like my husband said, "There's a reason he's out her by himself". Wise words to take seriously in the time before cell phones.

(33,310 posts)it's there to keep idiot tourists off the thin crust that could collapse into a geothermal feature. some of the pools are 140, 180 degrees F.
the bison don't do anything if you give them a wide berth. don't touch them, don't get between them an their escape route.

(33,310 posts)I've leaned on it, sat on it, and I'm 210 lbs. I've been pushed out of the way by giant-camera-lens wielding Chinese Tourists and backed into it, too.
Chain link would be an aesthetic disaster.

(46,166 posts)So the question isn't the sturdiness of the low fence. It isn't sturdy enough to keep the bison from smashing through it.
