(102,205 posts)Both have alternately had specials where a gallon of locally produced off-brand milk goes for $2.19 per gallon (all varieties).
Regular price for a gallon of same milk is around $2.69/gallon. About the same price at Sam's Club.
You are paying waaay too much, it appears to me. We don't have Publix out here, but my sister shops there in Atlanta and thinks they are expensive on many things.
Eggs are frequently on sale here for around $1.19 per dozen.
I don't buy bread.
Obviously "branded" milk varieties are much more expensive and organic is exorbitant. I had to discontinue my beloved milk delivery of local milk in glass bottles because transportation costs have resulted in their increasing the price beyond what I can justify. I understand their issues, but I just can't bring myself to pay that much anymore.

(4,542 posts)A dozen Grade A white eggs us $1.89 (but I buy cage-free brown eggs for $2.99/doz.).
The cheapest loaf of whole wheat bread is $2.79 (but I pay $3.49 for Orowheat).
This is at a Target grocery in a Northern CA city.
Does that help?
I agree that your milk seems really expensive.

(26,257 posts)Not a big buyer of bread and milk but as I recall the last time I bought them, I got a loaf of 'Italian' style sliced bread for less than $1.50 and a quart of 2% milk for around $1.19. Again, at Aldi.

(66,310 posts)Some dairies add sugar to their milk to make it taste better.
That's the problem with the fat-free mentality; we forget that fat tastes good. If you take it out of a food, you have to replace it with something that also tastes good, and that go-to additive is sugar.
That's one of the reasons why the rise of fat-free foods coincided with the obesity epidemic. People gorged themselves on fat-free foods thinking it was healthy.

(63,221 posts)I hate milk, don't really eat eggs unless I go out for brunch and get an omelette and don't buy loaves of bread. Will sometimes get some rolls for sandwiches or a specialty bakery baguette or Italian bread and cut it at home to make toast or eat w/ cheese, etc.

(5,268 posts)Ingles has various half-gallons of milk such as lactose free for about $2.49 to $3.00 and store brand breads range for $.89 to $1.49 at these stores and Walmart has $.99 bread. I am in NC.

(38,309 posts)When I buy eggs, I buy the organic sort, supposedly from chickens treated "humanely." Those are $4-$5 a dozen.
California has increasingly strict standards for egg producers. By 2022 only cage free eggs will be allowed.

I haven't been paying attention to generic egg prices, but maybe it's around $3.00 a dozen. Someone may tell me if I'm wrong.
I'll spend anywhere from $1.50 to $3.00 for what I consider ordinary sorts of bread.
My wife is vegetarian approaching vegan. I don't eat much meat at all.
Rice and beans are inexpensive. Good olive oil, fresh fruits, and vegetables cost a little more, but not nearly so much as eating meat every day.
