Teacher resigns after nude-photos incident; aide fired for dragging child

Teacher resigns after nude-photos incident; aide fired for dragging child

The Columbus (OH) school board was prepared last night to vote to remove two school employees for misconduct, but one resigned before that happened.

Michael D. Lawson, 53, a seventh-grade science teacher at Monroe Middle School, turned in a one-sentence letter of resignation to the board. Because of that, his situation wasn’t discussed and the resignation was accepted.

Lawson was threatened with dismissal after he brought a jump drive to school that contained pornographic photos, which a student saw.

The other employee, Mary F. Creedon, 62, a teacher’s aide at Livingston Elementary, was dismissed yesterday for dragging an uncooperative pre-kindergarten student by the wrist down a hallway in November. She could not be reached for comment.

...

Lawson had been accused of other types of wrongdoing. In March 2011, he signed a “last-chance agreement” with the Columbus school district in which he agreed to behave appropriately with students or face firing. He signed it after he was accused of kicking and manhandling two students.

He shouldn't have been allowed to resign--he should have been fired and his pension stripped. msanthrope Jan 2012 #1

I think the teacher's union president's comments at the end are just silly....
