PHILADELPHIA — Just after midnight, a suspect surrendered after shooting six police officers in a north Philadelphia neighborhood on Wednesday evening, igniting a standoff that dragged on for hours in what authorities called a hostage situation.

The suspect is Maurice Hill, a 36-year-old Philadelphia resident with a history of gun convictions, his former lawyer, Shaka Johnson, told The Washington Post. Philadelphia Police Sgt. Eric Gripp confirmed on Twitter early Thursday that the suspect is in custody.

Anyone who is interested in this era should watch Let The Fire Burn, a remarkable documentary about the history of the handling of the MOVE group here in Philly. It is comprised almost entirely of video footage and testimony under oath.

go back to the the earlier situations around the time Ramp was killed and the pre-fire months leading up to stand-off that summer? I often find the reporting on MOVE these days to be a little lacking when it comes to developing the history and therefore the mindset around what happened.

I actually take a "a pox on both their houses" approach to this situation, but I think the extremism of MOVE tends to get short shrift these days, and it had a lot to do with what eventually happened. Rightly or wrongly.

Killed by his own men and they bulldozed the crime scene

I had participated in treatment of a couple of the MOVE members while teaching at Penn. They were not ogres or animals. They were political extremists in a turbulent time. Fundamentally physically harmless except for the non-hygienic aspect.
