Quoting my friend who said that Russia is a democracy.
Okay how do I put this. She started to watch the Handmaid's Tale and I told her basically its the far right version of America. Of course she said it has nothing to do with religion. Oh boy here we go...I said it actually did. I have seen the whole series so far. She responded with I don't know what I'm talking about. *sigh* cue to me facepalming so hard. So it continues on with her explaining its martial law and how I don't know what that means. I respond with I know what the hell it means and then she proceeded to give examples to me of dictatorship and oppression. She said NK which I agreed with. I dropped Russia in there as well. This is where shit got heated. She said no it's a democracy. The former USSR was a communist country. I said yeah I'm not so sure about that nowadays. Killing opposition, rigging elections in other countries, ballot stuffing, arresting protesters. Sure it's a democracy lol. Well this was a huge mistake. It got her so heated because I make everything as a joke when it comes to politics and I don't know anything. Despite I read and watch the news every day. But I'm not allowed to joke about it at all and I was opposed to her beliefs and narrow minded. Never once did I say I was opposed to her beliefs about anything and I technically did back up my claims with news articles about what Russia has done after she said don't come into a situation without facts.
Enter my face.
I was so damn confused where this came from and I just left it at that. All I got later was. Sorry I snapped, I had a bad day. Well no shit
So yeah. Good morning guys. Hope you're having a swell morning

(10,156 posts)Drink a ton of whiskey and forget it happened. I've had a rough week from putting my dog to sleep to work. This certainly didn't help me. Just made me question reality even more. And it started over a TV show...of all things.

(14,530 posts)Modern day Russia is a dictatorship, under the guise of a democracy because they hold sham elections. It is not Communist.
I suggest giving her the Handmaid's tale book to read. It is absolutely about religion. Or more about how men use religion to promote their self interest and power.

(10,156 posts)But what do I know after all? I'm immature about politics. She's one of those people that hate when shes wrong on subjects she thinks she knows everything about. Mind you she has never voted once in her life.

(82,383 posts)Libertarians might like Russia's unregulated capitalism, but Russia would be just another example of what happens with that, and it's not good.
"The Shock Doctrine" makes and supports a good argument that all the experiments meant to prove that capitalism works best without regulation fail. Russia was one of them.

(10,053 posts)I would not take her literally or seriously. And don't be so hard on yourself vercetti2021, we are all just human and sometimes we are left with our mouths open when someone we know, that should know better, blindsides us with their nonsense. She apologized for snapping, and that's a good sign she still wants to be friends with you.

(10,156 posts)I'm more just fucking mindblow if anything. She said she hates talking politics with me because I'm immature about it. Yet I keep up with the news a whole lot more than her. I think its hilarious and sad at the same time. Figured it was worth a share of how my day started

These assholes love to talk about keeping government out of things, but are really just selfish people who just look after themselves. They take advantage of every possible government offering that they can.
They view a program that they can tap into as deserved. If they can't tap into it, they view it as a tax that they are somehow paying to support others. It's a twisted minds-view of life, and psychological splitting that borders on clinical.

I have one friend though, who is so vehemently anti-war, we actually get along as long as he isnt bashing Democratics

Every 'libertarian' I've ever encountered is really just someone who read 'The Fountainhead' at 15 and got stuck in that fantasy world.

(10,156 posts)Condescending as shit. I can't tell you the amount of condescending shit she spews and how angry she'll get when someone tells her something painfully truthful. Sometimes I wonder why I'm friends with her. Oh because she has a child and she is awesome. I'm afraid for her a lot though

(4,490 posts)A lot of faux intellectualism. It's like every one of them are using it to cover up some insecurity, educational defeciency, or character flaw.
And not that you're friend is one, but it's also a way I've seen people cover up their white supremecist sentiment. Ron and Rand Paul are good examples of this.
