Just got this letter;
************************************************
The Koch brothers recently rolled out their latest campaign to destroy our Social Security system, partnering with tax scam architect Stephen Moore to renew a push for privatization.
But a new book just revealed that their methods are even more insidious: The Koch Brothers have been secretly funding so-called centrist think tank Third Way, who have spent years aiming to erode Democrats commitment to Social Security.
Third Way has long been called a Wall Street front-group, as theyve spent decades scaremongering about the deficit and pursuing benefit cuts. But being on the Koch payroll is a whole different ballgame.
The Koch brothers, ideological billionaires who have spent decades corrupting our public institutions and paving the way for Republicans, have had their sights set on Social Security for a long time. They proudly fund right-wing think tanks like the Cato Institute and the Heritage Foundation to create an echo chamber of poisonous, anti-government ideas. Having Third Way in their pocket makes them all the more dangerous.
In retrospect, Third Ways secret Koch affiliation should have been obvious. In 2012, they published an Op-ed in the Wall Street Journal, criticizing Elizabeth Warren for leading the fight to expand Social Security. We led protests on Third Ways offices, where Matt Bennett admitted that they dont have grassroots support.
As the Koch brothers gear up for another assault on Social Security, we need to band together as a movement, and not be divided by Koch-funded concern trolling from our so-called allies.

(5,524 posts)If he actually funded half of what they said he did, then the left wing would be rolling in the dough.
Meanwhile, these guys are really the ones seeking to buy democracy.
I would love to see a legit side-by-side comparison some day.

(9,090 posts)the obama clinton deep state coup (really, 2 years of that at least), while their think tanks get to coordinate and use those stations on the local level to deregulate environmental and monopoly laws and sell their legislation - all basically for free while piggybacking university and pro sports many of those station depend on to pay for it. if they were going to pay $1000/hr 1200 stations x 15 hrsx 5 days/week = about $5BIL/year FREE for corporate, koch, putin, GOP, coc interests
all americans have to do to end the koch trump nightmares is to boycott and protest those radio stations and the 88 universities that support them until the ad industry has to start asking clients if they really actually want to support billionaire assholes. their most important tool - the monopoly that liberals ignore, will fall apart

(16,371 posts)It's interesting that many of us here on DU pegged the Koch affiliation of the DLC way, way, way back -- as early as 2003 -- and knew from the start that Third Way was just a front for corporate interests, which always means the brothers Koch.

(63,221 posts)What is the point for them? Cruelty? We pay into this via our payroll taxes, why do they want to take this benefit away from hard-working Americans? Don't they have enough already? People deserve to have some security in old age when they are no longer employable or can no longer work due to illness or infirmity.
What the hell is wrong with these people? Why are they so hell bent on getting their hands on this money that doesn't belong to them? I really think it is long past time to bring back this:

(8,910 posts)they want private entities to control it (i.e. Wall St. Banks).
Get it out of the efficient hands of the Government.
They want to get their greedy little hands on all that money coming from
everyone in the country. It's a spigot that doesn't turn off.
Then they will fee the program to death to suck out money from our accounts.
This is their end goal.

(5,545 posts)People on social security? I doubt it.
they don't want the populace perceiving the government as a force for good, which is exactly what Social Security, Medicare, etc. do. Hence, they want to destroy these programs.
The vast majority of MAGAts and other pukes have no idea this plot is ongoing. Also, many have bought into the con that these programs are failing, going bankrupt, etc. instead of understanding that periodic adjustments keep them robust.
Note that one of red don's biggest cons during the campaign was to blare that he would protect SS and Medicare. He knows these programs are hugely popular. If he gets back in for another 4 years. it'll instead be their death knell. As are the 666kook's666 plans to re-write the Constitution to prohibit such programs.

(9,090 posts)those stations have been blasting the country for 30 years with anti and privitization social security lies.
another reason it's nuts for liberals not to push 88 universities to stop broadcasting sports on 260 limbaugh stations
take the gun issue - and the recent pittsburg event, where 14 limbaugh stations depend on Penn St. 11, Pittsburgh 2, Temple 1 to keep bringing in advertisers to pay for their NRA love and excuses for semioutomatics

(4,871 posts)Charles Koch is 84, and David is 79. They'll be taking the dirt nap before they will achieve their goals.
Also, from what I am reading from Timothy Snyder, "The Road to Unfreedom", oligarchs and tyrants are not good at succession planning because they either don't see themselves taking the dirt nap, or think no one else can fill their shoes.
So keep an eye on the heirs apparent, but none have the reach of the original Kochtopi. At least yet.

(623 posts)It was not that many years ago that many prominent democrats were willing to partner with Bush to begin privatization of social security. My fear is that the more moderate democrats who are seeking the presidential nomination are still willing to go along with that. I know Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders would never go along with that but I am uncertain about any of the rest of them. Does anyone have any information about the democratic candidates' positions on this? The process of privatization includes means testing, refusing to raise social security taxes from those whose income comes from investments only, and limiting the social security tax to earned income less than $128,400. Any of the foregoing serves to underfund social security and ultimately force privatization which would bring all that new money to Wall Street. I don't want that.
