School district takes heat after first graders accessed gun in unlocked case

BY ARIS FOLLEY - 08/16/19 02:57 PM EDT

A school district in Ohio is coming under criticism after it was reported that a pair of first graders gained access to an unlocked case containing a firearm and allegedly picked it up, The Columbus Dispatch reported Friday.

According to the paper, the incident took place in March and involved students attending Highland Elementary School in South Bloomfield Township.

Vicky Nelson, the transportation director for the district, had reportedly brought her grandson, one of the students, to her office near the school. Nelson was reportedly part of the school’s concealed carry program, which was launched last year in an effort to protect students.

Her grandson was reportedly accompanied in the office by another first grader, the daughter of the district’s assistant transportation director, Christine Scaffidi.

What's the matter with those first graders? Don't they remember the words of Eddie the Eagle from the NRA? Let's lock these little pischers up for their innate curiosity and the failure of the alleged adults in securing their bang-bangs.

It's adjacent to miraculous that nobody got hurt or killed, but as we all know, this was a totally one-off event that nobody could have seen coming when all these brilliant proposals about teachers and administrators packing heat at school were first bruited about.

Oh, wait, you mean it's not really a good thing that the kids got the gun.

Never mind.
