Are right-wingers being hat Nazis during the national anthem now? I was at a parade at

Elk River, Idaho a couple weeks ago. We had the national anthem at the start and the announcer added, "please remove your hats". I've been there every year for several years for their Elk River days bash. I don't remember that. Half of those people are still drunk from the night before! Everyone complied but it was never a big deal before. Some took the hat off, some didn't.

I expect them to double down as a result of that dude getting busted for assaulting the kid for not taking his hat off. Expect trouble over that in the future.

I just went and watched several anthems and there are hats all over in the crowd, even the civilians at the Army-Navy game.

It was considered a sign of respect. It's also written into statute:

United States penal code Title 36, Chapter 10. There is no penalty listed for failure to comply, but it’s still a law. Specifically: “During a rendition of the national anthem… (B) men not in uniform should remove their headdress with their right hand and hold the headdress at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart…”

It also used to considered bad manners for a man to wear a hat indoors but not so much anymore. Times change, and people are far more casual now a days.

I personally don't get too wrapped around the axle about hat etiquette because there are far more important things to worry about.

I happen to live in an area that's heavily multicultural. Back in the days when things were sane, I'd say "Merry Christmas" to people I knew celebrated Christmas or "Happy Winter Solstice" to my atheist friends, "Happy Hanukkah" to my Jewish friends, et cetera, et cetera. People I was unsure of got "Happy Holidays."

Now, "Merry Christmas" is a rightwing thing. I almost never say it. I hope hats off to the anthem doesn't become a MAGA thing.

Some have ran with it and used it as a wedge issue, but I still say it to those I know are Christian.

Or if in civies, you put your hand over your heart. In the Navy you never salute unless you are covered or have a hat on.

I heard that in 2008, they allowed service members in civies to salute. But that goes against Navy tradition - you don't salute without a cover. So, technically, if you are in the Navy, you leave your hat on if you are going to salute in civies.

And if indoors, in the Navy, you must remove your hat (in uniform or not) and put it on only outdoors. So at an event outdoors, Navy folks are Not going to remove their hats. And indoors their hats are already going to be off.

I was working a gig at the Marine Corps Barracks at 8th and I in D.C. and walked inside the building to get a cup of coffee with a baseball cap on. As I walked down the hall almost everyone I met, in or out of uniform, touched their head. In the store I noticed every one had the caps tucked in their belt and would touch their cap and look at me. I figured it out. I still don't know if they were signalling me or doing a self check.

They render a hand salute but keep their covers on.

Frankly, it doesn't matter what civilians do when the anthem plays. There's no law with any penalty requiring removal of hats. Those who get all up in arms over this are morons.

What's worse is wearing flag clothing. That's also in the flag code. The right-bangers love their flag clothing.

that began with an anthem was during Gulf War I, and I neither stood nor removed my hat. Instead, I shut my eyes and beamed regrets to the innocents and unfortunates being slaughtered.

I was unaware of any antipathy directed toward me. Today, I'd more likely be shouted at or treated roughly.
