In 2018, New York was stuck in the mud. We had a Republican Majority in the State Senate that did everything they could to block progress. Thankfully, New York voters were just as frustrated as the Democratic Senators, and they helped elect the largest Senate Democratic Majority in State history this past November. We started the 2019 Legislative Session with 40 Democratic Senators in the 63-member Chamber, and we hit the ground running.
In just a few short months, we passed over 935 bills through the New York Legislature and had one of the most productive and progressive sessions in state history.
We passed voting and ethics reforms, common sense gun safety legislation, protections for womens health and rights, an over $1 billion increase in state education aid, and the most expansive affordable housing and tenant protection legislative package in history.
The new Senate Democratic Majority also passed a nation-leading environmental protection plan, expanded rights for the LGBTQ community, took steps to combat sexual harassment and unequal pay in the workplace, stood up for immigrants rights and our DREAMers, and reformed the justice system. Additionally, we held over five times as many legislative hearings compared with the former Senate Republican Majority to seek public input and expert testimony on important bills and issues.
With Donald Trump in the White House, it is clear that State Legislatures and governments have become the last line of defense for our rights and values. By helping elect a strong Senate Democratic Majority in New York, the DLCC made the progressive accomplishments of the past year possible. We need to help more Americans protect their rights and achieve real change by empowering progressive candidates and electing more Democratic Majorities in Statehouses across the nation.

(35,454 posts)That the story. It's because elected Dems decided to call themselves independent dems and joined the cons to stop progress in the state, aided and abetted by Cuomo. In'18, the citizens, fed up by being disenfranchised, struck back and kicked most of the turncoats out and the Dems became the majority they were supposed to be. And Cuomo, finger in the wind, joined them, though they didn't need him. NOw a difference is being made no thanks to the turncoats and Cuomo.

(111,082 posts)They could vote down the filibuster rule for legislation in the Senate. They could pass everything with a simple majority. They could have something similar to the First Hundred Days of FDR.
They could repeal the Trump tax cuts and put a minimum tax on all millionaires in this country.
They could re-institute all the regulations that were unwisely done away with.
They could give new powers to the FBI to investigate the Russian influence within our elections and put a few guilty people in jail.
They could create a jobs program to plant a hundred million trees and to clean up our parks and streams.
They could invest in a new Green Energy Plan. We could be self-sufficient in energy without having to use fossil fuels.
They could expand the Supreme Court to eleven members if Trump's appointments became too political in their decisions.
They could pass a trillion dollar infrastructure bill to begin rebuilding Americas infrastructure.
They could make healthcare and education as benefits for all Americans.
They could pass a bill to educate more doctors and nurses for our aging population.
They could protect Social Security and Medicare with a small surtax on every trade made on Wall Street.
They could re-build the Flint Water System and make it a model for all of America.
There is a lot they could do if they only had the Senate, the House, and the White House and the will to do it.
