Leaked UK memos warn of food, drug shortages in Brexit chaos

LONDON — Secret British government documents have warned of serious disruptions across the country in the event that the U.K. leaves the European Union without a trade deal on Oct. 31, according to a report.

The Sunday Times newspaper published what it said was what the British government expects in the case of a sudden, "no-deal" Brexit. Among the most serious: "significant" disruptions to the supply of drugs and medicine, a decrease in the availability of fresh food and even potential fresh water shortages due to possible interruptions of imported water treatment chemicals.

Although the grim scenarios reportedly outlined in the government documents have long been floated by academics and economists, they've been repeatedly dismissed as scaremongering by Brexit proponents.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has said he is ready to leave the EU regardless of whether he is able to renegotiate the Brexit deal struck with Brussels by his predecessor, Theresa May.

By necessity, any island nation is dependent on massive imports of everything just to maintain the public lifestyle. Once they tore up the trade agreements that kept their economy humming -- and whose numbskull idea was that anyway! -- what did the politician expect would happen?

Did they promise the ill informed voters pie in the sky, an easy and seamlessly transparent switch with no change in goods and services available or prices? Why did anyone think this was a good plan?

They must start all over from scratch... For everything! Trade arrangements that took months and years to resolve are gone and TPTB are starting from zero with no standing to attract business. Everything must be renegotiated (and it will be far more expensive) from toothpaste, fresh food, clothing, to cars and building materials, now that they are at the mercy of the suppliers and the foreign governments they just kicked out.

I can't understand the shortsighted stupidity that ever got this disaster rolling in the first place.
