Would getting into a war help Trump win re-election? I sort of doubt it. If he appeared to have caused it somehow, it probably would be viewed as just another sign of his incompetence. And the people he currently has around him probably would be ill-equipped to deal with it. After all, he has several "acting" cabinet officials at the moment and that's how he likes it.

but, unless we- or one of our allies- are attacked first, there's nothing that I can think of offhand that would cause people to rally around Trump and, hence, no real motivation for him to start something.

Nixon secretly bombed Cambodia. When it came out the crap hit the fan and we had Kent State and all of that. But Nixon still won reelection - big time.
