and the lazy thing to do is to follow the latest shiny object, which plays right into Trump's strength in manipulating the media.

Rachel Maddow often does in-depth stories in her A-block that go back years and even decades. She can trace the background and build the narrative for recent events as well as anybody else out there.

There is a real shortage of that kind of in-depth reportage in modern journalism.
