Stories about Romney's concern for fellow Mormons Melissa Gay and David Oparowski were nice, but are there any similar stories where Romney showed similar concern for people who were not members of his church?
I have Repub acquaintances who oppose "welfare" because they claim that the social safety net is a role that church should fulfill and not a government function, which always gives me the creeps because it implies that "care for people who share my faith is OK, but care beyond that is nothing I wish to participate in."
I get that same vibe when I hear stories about where Romney has shown concern for members of his own church but I'm not hearing stories about Romney showing similar care for any non-Mormons.
Is that too cynical?

(47,352 posts)I've heard stories about Romney's "concern" for members of his church that included giving unsolicited advice. That apparently is the job of a bishop. Jon Huntsman's daughter Abby was talking about how her bishop called her in because he heard she was dating a non-Mormon. Its kind of creepy. She ended up leaving the church because of it.
As for churches providing the safety net for society, does that mean people who don't belong to an organized religion are shit out of luck?

(350 posts)Catholic or Muslim or an atheist? Is it a coincidence that Gay was a member of Romney's church or was that more than a coincidence? If it is not a coincidence, what does that say about Romney?
This reinforces the perception that active Mormons are rather clannish. Non-Mormons are not allowed "inside" their world. I've heard more than one person say that their own parents weren't even allowed to witness their wedding because they weren't Mormon.
I seriously doubt that Romney would have shut down the office to look for a daughter of someone outside his faith. I've gotten the impression that they take care of their own, which is fine, but it isn't appealing in a president who is expected to represent ALL Americans.
I may have a different perspective after I read the book The Real Romney. I just added it to my Kindle yesterday (only $2.99).
